This is not really a recommendation, it's more of a strain of thoughts. I watched "The Mafia Kills Only in Summer" today, and wrote a small review for it over on letterboxd. Usually movies like this come and go and leave no impression behind, but this movie sparked an old thought that I used to have: the route your brain takes as a creative when faced with an oppurtonity not taken. In other words, some concepts or ideas (or even movie titles) are constructed in a way that as you are watching the movie, your brain sort of makes up the story based on those concepts and ideas and then the resulting disappointment from the movie not being "very good" is doubled because you can see the potential and it baffles you that the original creator did not use this idea to the fullest. I first heard this thought from Matt Sloan on "Welcome to the Basement", and ever since then it has weighed on me. I can think of a number of movies that I think did not satisfy the idea, from simple ones like "Elysium" to more strange ones like "Sabata", I felt that the idea was not utilized very effectively. Now for critiques of these movies I do try to shut these voices, but when I daydream I can't help but imagine what could be done with these concepts, and then ask myself if it's too late and the movie has been made so it's not going to work anymore. For example, in the case of the aforementioned "Mafia Kills Only in Summer", what would gappen if it remained a silly dark comedy about a man living side by side with Mafia, instead of a historical message? The possibility is intriguing, but it's just that, a possibility. Would it be better, or worse? Put plainly, I would've loved to take a crack at that story, but it feels odd since it's based on someone else's idea and concept. Not that it's making any difference, ideas are there to inspire. Anyways, that was the thought I had tonight while thinking of this movie. Does this make any sense to you? Do you have movies like this in your memory that just makes you feel this way? #mafiakillsonlyinsummer #pif #lamafiauccidesolodestate #pierfrancescodiliberto #mattsloan #welcometothebasement #movies #cinema https://www.instagram.com/p/CT4_8tIrRuQ/?utm_medium=tumblr
