Hey!
Did you ever manage to find out what exactly Maureen Wilson's descent was (like her parents) and where exactly in India was she born? And how did her family came about in England if Wilson was born in India? That too, around India's Independence from Britain in 1947. I believe it was around that time her parents moved to England and her father was a goverment worker.
I know that she was an Anglo-India, a Eurasian. But it had always been unclear to me how much English and Indian blood she had. I very clearly remember Robert talking about Maureen's portuguese history as well. Now that's not too surprising to me, as someone who is from India, and having known about a particular state here called Goa, which was colonised by the Portuguese for a naval hold in the past. Then again, most sources (because I can't remember a single one of them) claim that she was born in Kolkata, which is in Bengal, far from Goa, but Bengal does have some portuguese history too. But not as much as Goa does.
I also believe Maureen was a Christian.
So, in short, what do you know about Maureen family's history?
Sorry for this ridiculously long question.
Hi,
I know next to nothing about Maureen's family history.
One of Robert's exes, Najma Akhtar, said in the biography of Robert by Paul Rees that Maureen is a Christian.
I remember there being a lot of big family get-togethers. I met Robert's uncle and his sister, his children, and also Maureen and Shirley and their extended family. Both of them were lovely and very welcoming. They're of Indian origin, but much more Anglicized than I am, Christian whereas I'm a Muslim. I'd never been around Asians like that. Robert would often say to me: 'Maureen and Shirley can do this, why can't you? They're like this, why aren't you?' As people he and I were very different.
hii!! i know this is a random ass question and it might sound a bit off but i promise there’s a purpose :))
do you if robert’s first wife happens to be of gypsy blood?
So, anon, internationally most Roma people now assert that word is a slur so I will say Roma/ Romani generally - or Romanichal if I'm talking about English Romani people.
(though note in Britain English Romanichal people do use the words Gypsy or Gypsies always capitalised for their organisations and as a reclaimed self naming, as well as Romany with a y - and there are many other Roma ethnicities here, as well as other Travellers all of who face significant ostracism and mistreatment so please feel free to use links to learn more)
Maureen Wilson, Robert's only wife, is Anglo Indian, born in Kolkata and raised in Birmingham. But Robert himself is Romanichal from his mum.
