Mahabali is a king of the Asuras in Hindu mythology. One of the daitya, he was a devotee of Vishnu. He was a generally kind and benevolent king, but possessed a violent temper. His Asura associates also abused their power.
As king, Mahabali won many wars, but displeased Vishnu. Unwilling to take the life of his own devotee, he instead showed Mahabali his shame. Mahabali then took his own life. Some say Vishnu allowed him into Heaven, while others claim he became immortal. He is also said to return to Earth once a year during the harvest season.
