Spoiler alert: they nearly died, but hey now they get advantage on intimidation checks because of all the scarring! Max Kitt (mixtasal - my homebrew race) the Paladin who's oath is Commitment to the Bit (yes, that's homebrew too) who got black out drunk with their god and woke up with a new pet and a cloak of billowing, and every fight for him is just a "friendly spar"!
