How does cartoon Bojack Horseman use a talking horse to give a voice to mental health and LGBTQ+ issues? TV critic Max Marks investigates
On the face of it Bojack Horseman is a rather bizarre creation, even for an animated comedy. The setting is entirely unique, but the beauty of animations is they can create an alternative reality and invent their own universes. After a shaky start, the cartoon swiftly found its feet and it has produced some excellent satirical takes on current affairs and Hollywood as well as touching on some very serious issues. This is a departure from the traditional adult animation model, followed by such shows as South Park and Family Guy, which focus on comedy and use the cartoon setting to get away with some truly outrageous behaviour.

What They Say: “WOLFCOP: LITTLE BROTHEL OF HORRORS has errant lupine lawman Lou Garou and his conspiracy-crazed sidekick Willie Higgins running into more trouble on the road. When Lou accepts a bit of small-town hospitality from local bordello madame Fey, he’s quickly trapped in a prison of his two favorite vices: Women and booze. But this den of sin harbors a dark secret, one that just might eat WolfCop alive…”
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers): In the newest issue of Wolfcop, Max Marks cranks it up to 11 in the action department…though with its price. With their car broken down in the middle of nowhere, our alcoholic werewolf and his bud, Willie, find themselves in the arms of a rather generous brothel. With nothing else to do until their jalopy gets fixed, the duo decide to waste a little time with some buxom female friends, for FREE. What could possibly go wrong here, right?
First off, the Canada in this comic series is something wilder than any Canada I’ve ever seen. One look at this brothel and you KNOW something is up here, two homeless-looking guys getting a night on the house for no reason other than stopping a bar fight? Yeah, okay. Right when things are about to get hot and heavy however, the surprise is ghoulishly sprung. What were once beautiful young women are now grotesque walking corpses!
Trapped in two different rooms of the brothel, Willie and Wolfcop both have their own problems to deal with here, one with irreparable consequences. Forced to fight alone, Willie sees his rocky life with the Lycan officer come to an end at the blade of katana (duh). Laying helplessly chained to a bed, Lou can only watch in horror Willie’s demise, before bursting into a fit of rage. Finally managing to defeat Manny, the humongous skeletal bodyguard, Lou leaves the brothel to return home, sparing the mistress’s life…or so it seems.
In Summary: Trapped in the most quintessential “too good to be true” situation, our duo becomes a solo act at the ends of a supernatural brothel. The trauma, rage, and disgust at the events unfolding leave Lou to make a decision he never thought he would have to make, returning to his home…and his wife.
