Y/N quietly read her book and held Max's cold hand. It was another day of Max asleep in her unexplained coma, and Y/N was still at her bedside. She wanted to make sure she was there when Max finally woke up, and came back everyday from the start of the visit hours to the end. She knew all of Max's nurses and doctors, a few judgemental looks when she wouldn't release Max's hand.
The stereo played the "Running Up That Hill" on repeat, Max's friends told her to always keep the song on. She didn't understand the whole monster thing, but she understood her girlfriend was stuck in the hospital because of it. She read the last few lines of the book and shut it. She never knew if Max heard her when she talked to her, but she did it anyway.
"Okay, that book was awful. You mean to tell me she picks the boy over her dream job?" She complained. She softly rubbed Max's hand. Her eyes were sad as she looked at her girlfriend, and looked to her hands to distract her. "The boy should have moved to her so she could have had both. That's how easy it is." Y/N went into further details of her review of the book.

The next morning, Y/N arrived with birthday balloons and red nail polish. Her heart broke as she decorated Max's hospital room with birthday decorations. She invited all of Max's friends to visit and celebrate Max's birthday. She wasn't that close with them, but she selfishly wanted to pretend everything was fine. She knew Max's friends were worried if she would wake up and tried to make Y/N see both outcomes, but Y/N refused to believe Max would give up and she wasn't going to either.
She painted Max's nails with wet eyes. "I wanted to make sure you were prepared for the big day. Officially nineteen, you are so old," she joked. She closed the nail polish and looked up at Max's emotionless face. "I really miss you," her tone was no longer upbeat. "I want to put on a brave face, and I want to handle things the way you do. But I'm terrified to lose you. If you can hear me, just give me the tiniest bit of a sign, please." She cried as Max's body didn't move an inch. There were no signs she was there, just a cold body Y/N cried into.
A knock on the door had Y/N on her feet. She wiped her face and plastered a fake smile. She opened the door and happily greeted the large group of Max's friends. "I did bring some cookies if you guys want some."
"Oh score!" Dustin said and ran to the small table. Y/N sometimes forgot how many friends Max had, it saddened her to think Max was all she had. Eleven walked up to Max first, she wished her a happy birthday and rubbed her shoulder.
"Pretty," Eleven hummed as she looked at Max's hand. Y/N smiled at the comment. Mike stood behind Eleven and tried not to seem as sad as he felt.
"The room looks awesome," Lucas said as he looked around. "She would have appreciated this."
"She does appreciate it," Dustin corrected. Y/N tried to pretend Lucas's comment didn't snap her heart into two. She smiled gracefully at Dustin and nodded. Lucas apologized with his eyes but she didn't sweat it.

Y/N was surprised she wasn't sick of the repeated song; instead, she sang along as she hung the small ornaments. The small tree sat on Max's bedside, filled with the cheapest decorations Y/N could afford. Y/N lit the small Christmas candle, in hopes that Max would be able to smell it since she couldn't see the Christmas around her. She sat on the same cushion and held her hand.
"Your friends might stop by later. They have some Christmas stuff with their families. We are always the lonely ones," Y/N sadly chuckled and nudged Max's shoulder. "But there isn't anyone else that I'd rather be with on Christmas." She kissed Max's hand and held it close to her heart. "The only family I need."
~
Y/N fumed as she walked into Max's room, she didn't mean to slam the door as harshly as she did.
"I know you don't want to hear it, but it's the truth!" Steve argued. Y/N rolled her eyes.
"Just because you are older than me doesn't know you more than I do!" Y/N fought back. She kept her voice leveled now aware she was in Max's space. "She's coming back." She gripped Max's hand.
Steve sighed and rubbed his face. "It's been over a year, and there's been nothing to show she's even there."
"I know she's there," Y/N tried to convince him, and maybe a part of her self. "I'm not going to let them unplug her and forget about her." She looked at Steve with a deadly stare. "Get the hell out of here."
"Don't you think she would want you to be happy?"
She scoffed at the cliché comment. "I'm happy with her."
Steve gave up and walked out. Once the door shut, Y/N allowed herself to cry. She angrily kicked the wall, tired of the frustration and disappointment. She looked down at Max and softly cradled her head. "It can be a year, two years, or hundred, I'm still going to be right here."

Max panted as she saw a portal open, she could see her girlfriend in the hospital room. She was asleep, hunched over in a chair with her head near Max's hand. Max tried not to think and ran. She ran towards the vision of her girlfriend. She noticed the portal didn't move, the more she ran the closer she was. She gulped as she reached the portal, she didn't waste a second and jumped through.
Max opened her eyes and took in a deep breath. She fluttered at the bright lights, not able to see much. But she could tell she wasn't with Vecna anymore. She tried to move her hand but it wouldn't budge. Her eyes adjusted to the room and she let out a choked sob once she saw Y/N. There were so many dark days that she thought she'd never see her again. Y/N's hand rested on Max's leg and she tried to move it to wake her up, but she couldn't feel anything.
"Y/-Y/N," she tried. Her voice was rough and dry. Y/N didn't budge. "Y/N." She tried again.
Y/N opened her eyes, and groaned as her body ached. She looked at Max and it took a second to realize Max looked back at her.
"OH MY GOD!" Y/N shouted. She apologized with her eyes and grabbed Max's hand. "Sorry! Hi! Do you need anything? Water?" She didn't wait for an answer and grabbed a cup of water and helped Max drink it. Max was thankful for the water as it helped her dry throat.
"Hi, love,"
Y/N couldn't believe she heard Max's voice, a state of shock as she looked at her. Max wanted to smile, and she wasn't sure if she could.
"Hi, red," Y/N smiled. "Welcome back. Can I turn this off now?" She joked and switched it off.
"It turns out I didn't need the song," Max said, "every time you touched me, I could see. I'd run to you and you were always out of reach. But- something - was different, i made it through. I needed you."
Y/N cried and shoved her face in Max's neck. Max cried as she felt her touch. "I knew you were going to come back."
"I know, I saw, felt, and heard everything. You never left," Max said as her lip trembled.

Max sat on a clump of dirt. She wasn't sure if she would ever get out of this damn place, stuck in Henry's mind forever.
"Okay, that book was awful. You mean to tell me she picks the boy over her dream job?"
Max jumped to her feet, she recognized her girlfriend's voice immediately but didn't know how she heard it. She felt herself panic at the idea that Henry had her as well. She looked around and froze when she saw a tiny portal that showed Y/N in a hospital room. It was as if Max opened her eyes in her coma. She felt a tear slide down her face as Y/N's sad eyes looked down to Max's hand. She could see the heartbreak on her face and it pained Max to see. Max lost everyone. Her shitty brother, who might have had the chance to be good. Her dad and her mom. Henry took them all from her and she didn't want Y/N to be tied up into any of this, she wasn't supposed to lose her too.
"The boy should have moved to her so she could have had both. That's how easy it is." The portal vanished.
~
Max smiled as she watched Y/N paint her fingernails. Max didn't know what day she was on, but she caught parts of her life from the portal. Whenever she tried to run to it, it got further away. She wasn't sure if it was a way for Henry to break her down, but in a way it made her stronger.
"Officially nineteen, you are so old,"
Max laughed at her comment
"I want to put on a brave face, and I want to handle things the way you do. But I'm terrified to lose you. If you can hear me, just give me the tiniest bit of a sign, please." Max frowned as her girlfriend began to cry into her.
"I've been trying, I promise!" Max shouted at her. She didn't understand how this portal worked but she wanted her words to travel through. Max began to run towards her, all she wanted was to be with her again. But again, the portal moved. She collapsed to her knees and cried out in frustration. She closed her eyes and tried to picture her lifeless body on the bed. She tried to move a finger, just one goddamn finger. She bit her lip and tried over and over. "One tiny movement. Come on!" She yelled to herself. For the first time, Max feared there wasn't a way back.
~
Max saw the portal open and this time, Eleven was in front of her. Max smiled at her friend, she almost hoped Eleven would jump into her head and save her. Max looked around the room and noticed all her friends were there.
"The room looks awesome," Lucas said as he looked around. "She would have appreciated this." Max frowned at the past tense he used, fully aware of the way her girlfriend's body slumped.
"I do appreciate it," Max corrected and wished they could hear her.
"She does appreciate it," Dustin corrected and Max smiled.

Max hated that she had to miss all these moments with her girlfriend. They only had each other, and they weren't able to be together.

Steve sighed and rubbed his face. "It's been over a year, and there's been nothing to show she's even there."
Max scrunched her eyebrows at the sound of Steve's voice. She looked up and saw the portal, her heart tugged at the way Y/N tried to hold back her tears.
"Just because you are older than me doesn't know you more than I do!" Y/N fought back. She kept her voice leveled now aware she was in Max's space. "She's coming back." She gripped Max's hand.
Max was worried by her girlfriend's upset tone, curious about the argument.
Steve sighed and rubbed his face. "It's been over a year, and there's been nothing to show she's even there."
Max felt the blow to her chest at the look in her girlfriend's eyes, a look that said a part of her believed Steve could be right. She wished she could tell them that she tried. She didn't want them to give up on her.
"I know she's there," Y/N tried to convince him, and maybe a part of her self. "I'm not going to let them unplug her and forget about her." She looked at Steve with a deadly stare. "Get the hell out of here."
"Don't you think she would want you to be happy?"

"You're right here," Max cried, and Y/N cried with her. "I want to hug you so bad but I can't feel anything."
Y/N squeezed Max into a hug and Max cried at the warmth. "I love you so much."
"I love you too," Max whispered.
