Maxine O’Conner (Formerly Máire Ó Ciaragain II) was the daughter of Máire Ó Ciaragain I, the leader who led clan Kerrigan in several open revolts. Her mother was a well-respected and fierce leader and Max was raised to be the same, which was quite the accomplishment in the fifteenth century. Her mother died when she was seventeen and young Maxine did what any respectable daughter would do and took over the clan until her own “death” at the age of twenty seven. Vampires weren’t totally unheard of in Ireland although that wasn’t what they were called in the folklore Max was familiar with. She was caught completely off-guard when one attacked her and was totally baffled to return from the dead.
But Max thrived. Her mother was basically a warrior queen and Max has been around enough bloodshed in her life that she didn’t have any problems adapting to vampirism. She liked watching history pass around her and seeing women thrive. She traveled the world, loving every inch of it she got to see. She moved to the US in the early 1800s and has mostly stuck around since. In 1850, she attended the first National Women’s Rights Convention under the name Margaret Clarke. In 1916, she protested Margaret Sanger’s arrest under the name Mary Carr. During the twenties, she was a flapper. In the sixties, she protested for equal rights (which was difficult when many protests happened during the day). She met Ash in 1950 when she stumbled into his bookstore. She immediately knew he wasn’t human; she could smell it. But she didn’t know what he was and that intrigued her. He’s been stuck with her ever since. She may not be in his life consistently, but she pops up whenever she can and she loves scaring the hell out of him when it’s possible. She also enjoys endlessly teasing him and just generally being annoying.
