Hades Delaney
What: cat
Gender: male (he/him) but also a cat so not big on gender
Orientation: pan
Age: appears 30s
Height: 6'1
FC: Jesse Will.iams
Hades is Alexi’s current familiar and the only real attachment the man has. As much as he gives Alexi attitude, he truly loves the witch and wouldn’t know what to do if something happened to him. He knows the world would be a much, much better place if Alexi wasn’t in it, but losing him would destroy the cat.
He’s an average cat, but Alexi uses magic to allow him to speak or give him a human form as needed. He leaves the cat in charge of the shop whenever he’ll be gone for a while. Hades prefers to be a cat-- more napping, less working-- but Alexi doesn’t care. Hades tries to be the other’s conscience sometimes, pointing out the moral shortcomings of his decisions, but it does little.
Because of the magic fiddling with his biology, Hades will live a much longer than average life for a cat, closer to a human lifespan. However he’s not immortal and doesn’t think he wants to be.
His cat form is that of a simple black cat with blue eyes.
Eleanor Virginia Wellington (formerly Delaney)
What: witch
Gender: female (she/her)
Orientation: straight
Age: appears 50s
Occupation: Magic dealer -- works with only a small number of clients
Height: 5'7
FC: Cal.ista Flock.hart
Eleanor was born to a family of powerful witches and has been practicing magic her whole life. Her family was all over the spectrum when it came to the type of magic they practiced. They fell anywhere from good to neutral to evil, so no one was surprised when Eleanor found malevolent magic more interesting and no one cared enough to stop her.
She was seventeen when her family took a trip to Italy. Her family met Miguel’s family during the trip and their parents thought they would make a good match. It wasn’t love at first sight, but he was kind and handsome and open-minded for the time. He didn’t care for the witch thing, but he didn’t try to have her family burned. She was eighteen when they married and twenty when Alexi was born. Having a child changed very little for her. She continued practicing cruel magic and once her son was a little older, she started teaching him. When he was fifteen, she took off, looking for a way to find immortality. She was 35 in a time where people didn’t have long lives. She did love her family, but she was ambitious and determined to continue learning her craft. She spent the next fifteen years figuring out how to become immortal through magic and may have had a fling while she was working on it. It didn’t last, though. It couldn’t when the spell required killing someone you loved. Her husband and son were out of the questions for her, so she killed her lover and cast the spell in her fifties. She doesn’t regret a single moment of it. Now she runs a successful magic business and is one of the most powerful and terrifying women alive. Her son is still around even if her husband is not and she's happy with her life.
Alexi Angelo Delaney
What: witch
Gender: male (he/him)
Orientation: pan
Age: appears 42
Occupation: dealer of malevolent magic
Height: 6'1
FC: ben bar.nes
The son of Eleanor Virginia Wellington and Miguel Angelo Delaney, Alexi had a future as a dark witch from the moment he was born. His mother is a powerful witch while his father was a mortal man, but that didn't stop her from raising him to be like her. They lived in London, but moved to Jamestown in 1609. They lived there for six years, before moving to Philadelphia. He learned witchcraft from his mother, who taught him both all kinds of magic -- good and bad, until she disappeared when he was fifteen. Miguel and Alexi believed her to be dead and moved again so that Alexi wouldn’t meet the same fate. They lived in Albany, where Miguel continued his career as a blacksmith, attempting to teach the trade to his son. Alexi studied it, but was always more interested in magic. Despite learning all kinds of magic, he always felt a pull towards the crueler kind.
Miguel passed away when Alexi was twenty-four. The man was forty-five when he passed. Alexi moved to Boston after that and began selling black magic. When he was thirty-one, his mother turned up again and asked him if he would like to become immortal, only to discover that he had done so on his own a year before. Alexi and Eleanor had a shaky relationship at first, upon her return, but it has improved over the years. The two keep in at least weekly contact and see each other in person every five or ten years. Despite their improved relationship, things aren't exactly good between them.
The witch currently runs his own magic shop, making deals with patrons to get them what they need. He doesn’t take money, but deals in things like souls, hearts, blood, and favors and he always gets paid. Clients who try to get out of their deals regret it every time, because Alexi doesn’t handle getting screwed over lightly.
The man is not a demon, though he suspects he has a future as one. Still, when people are desperate, they come to him. He has a fairly wide variety of services he’s willing to provide, from malevolent magic to revenge-driven assassination. As long as someone’s willing to pay, he’ll rarely turn down a deal.
Alexi isn’t really the relationship type, although he’s not above dating someone to get something from them. He’s emotionally manipulative and if he says, “I love you,” he probably doesn’t mean it. He very rarely sleeps with people who know who he really is. It’s far too much of a risk and he often only does it when he wants to manipulate them.
When interacting with people, he tends to be polite and charming unless given a reason not to be. He can always access a knife and his magic and he's not afraid to use either. The only person he really likes isn’t a person at all, but his cat, Hades.
Ashley Christopher Warren
Nickname: Ash
What: warlock
Gender: male (he/him)
Age: appears 30s, born in the 1400s
Height:Â 6'3
Orientation: pansexual
Occupation: owner of "The Prints and the Paper" bookstore
fc: ad.am bro.dy
Ashley was born in Wales in 1427 to his demon mother and witch father. His parents were an odd match, but a powerful one and really, that was all that mattered to either of them. Love didn’t have much to do with their marriage, but at least they loved little Ash. He was their pride and joy, because they knew he would be something else.
They were right. Ash grew into his magic at a young age, mastering it quickly and easily. Unlike his father, he didn’t need a wand or a spell to do what he wanted and unlike his mother, he wasn’t bound to making deals to use his powers. His magic most strongly manifested in control over the elements, the ability to do things like summon fire or manipulate earth. Of course, he has other powers too, but that’s what comes easiest to him.
Luckily for him, he inherited Mom’s immortality. Or maybe not so lucky. After all, she was killed by hunters when he was fourteen and he had the unpleasant experience of watching Dad grow old and die while he remained the same age for the next nearly six hundred years. Whoops. But hey, it’s not so bad. He’s gotten to see how earth has grown and changed and oh, wait. No, hunters are still a thing and people are assholes. Okay, it kinda sucks.
Mom and Dad were always way into the whole black magic thing, but Ashley just never really picked it up. He didn’t have much interest in it and when they were gone, he stopped bothering to learn. He decided to live out a “normal” life, whatever that might be. Currently, it means own a bookstore and reading a lot.
He knows he’s strong. At least, in theory, he knows he has a lot of magic he could potentially access. But in practice… well, not so much. He’s not all that confident in his abilities. Hence the bookstore and not, say, some bad ass magic shop. He spends his time around humans, but doesn’t really like to let them in too close. Humans die, after all. The friends he’s made over the years have all been demons or vampires and friends is a relative term. Frankly, they scare the hell out of him. Can’t tell them that, though. They might use it against him…
He’s owned the bookstore for two decades now, moving around a lot to avoid suspicion. He’s just kind of… waiting for something new to show up, really.
Maxine O'Connor
Nickname: Max
What: vampire
Gender: female (she/her)
Age: appears 27, born in the 1400s
Height:Â 5'3
Orientation: 4 on the kinsey scale
fc: ru.th neg.ga
Note: Bio is under reconstruction to reflect the change of fc.
Maxine O’Conner (Formerly Máire Ó Ciaragain II) was the daughter of Máire Ó Ciaragain I, the leader who led clan Kerrigan in several open revolts. Her mother was a well-respected and fierce leader and Max was raised to be the same, which was quite the accomplishment in the fifteenth century. Her mother died when she was seventeen and young Maxine did what any respectable daughter would do and took over the clan until her own “death” at the age of twenty seven. Vampires weren’t totally unheard of in Ireland although that wasn’t what they were called in the folklore Max was familiar with. She was caught completely off-guard when one attacked her and was totally baffled to return from the dead.
But Max thrived. Her mother was basically a warrior queen and Max has been around enough bloodshed in her life that she didn’t have any problems adapting to vampirism. She liked watching history pass around her and seeing women thrive. She traveled the world, loving every inch of it she got to see. She moved to the US in the early 1800s and has mostly stuck around since. In 1850, she attended the first National Women’s Rights Convention under the name Margaret Clarke. In 1916, she protested Margaret Sanger’s arrest under the name Mary Carr. During the twenties, she was a flapper. In the sixties, she protested for equal rights (which was difficult when many protests happened during the day). She met Ash in 1950 when she stumbled into his bookstore. She immediately knew he wasn’t human; she could smell it. But she didn’t know what he was and that intrigued her. He’s been stuck with her ever since. She may not be in his life consistently, but she pops up whenever she can and she loves scaring the hell out of him when it’s possible. She also enjoys endlessly teasing him and just generally being annoying.
Khadim Malik Antar
Nickname: Mal
What: jinni
Gender: male (he/him)
Age: appears 42
Height:Â 6'0
Orientation: pansexual
fc: na.veen and.rews
Bio:
Being a jinni is pretty cool. Power. Immortality. Invulnerability. Being chained to the desire of any mortal who picks up your lamp.
Okay, so the last part’s pretty shit.
And sure, Malik’s met some pretty cool people in the thousands of years he’s been alive, but he’s also met some pretty terrible ones.
(And then there was that one who was both.)
He’s been doing his job for longer than he can remember and granting wishes gets kind of dull after a few thousand years. Masters don’t keep him long and when they do, it always ends terribly for him. He lets himself get attached, knowing he shouldn’t, knowing it’ll fuck him over. In ancient Egypt, he loved a girl who used that to her advantage. She manipulated him and got him to break the rules without actually breaking them. He’d have done anything for her and she was fully aware of that. When he realized what she’d been doing, it nearly destroyed him. He’s been a lot more closed off ever since.
Jinn have a reputation for extreme evil or extreme good, but Malik likes to think he lands more in the neutral zone. Not every wish he grants backfires, but not all of them work out either. A big part of this is the master. If they’re kind and respectful towards him, he’s a lot more willing to help the wish run smoothly. If they’re rude, he does his best to make sure the wishes backfire in the worst possible way.
Malik prefers not to go by his first name and will very rarely tell someone what it is. It means “servant” and the irony is not lost on him.
There are a few rules that come with being a jinni, of course. Can’t have all that power without any limits. Three rules apply to the wish-maker:
1. Jinn can’t bring back the dead. 2. They can’t make anyone fall in love. 3. No wishing for more wishes.
A couple of rules apply to jinn:
1. They can’t betray or disobey their current master. 2. They can’t take a life unless they are ordered to do so. 3. They can’t be freed without someone taking their place.
Malik doesn’t mind being attached to the lamp, but he wouldn’t stop someone from wishing him free. He probably wouldn’t even warn them of the consequences. Freedom would diminish his powers, but it wouldn’t remove them completely and it might be nice to be his own master for once.
