Max grew up in a decent sized family on a rather large stretch of land. As a kid, he never had to worry about hunters or anything of the like. It was a small town, mostly farming, so there was plenty of distance between his family and neighbors.

But he wanted to see more of the world and headed out when he was about 19. He got into a pretty good college, put himself through veterinary school, bought an old bus and converted it into a mobile vet clinic to help out lower income pet owners. 

He had always wanted a family so when he met Tani and Harlow, he was almost immediately smitten. Harlow was a great kid and he enjoyed stepping in to help with him and it was very obvious how in love he was with Tani. Harlow actually helped Max plan his proposal. When Amaya came along, both he and Tani agreed that their little family was perfect, that they didn’t need any more kids because they had everything they wanted with Harlow and Amaya.

The Crew

Quartermaster - Arabella - Siren

She and Max argued and butted heads on nearly everything. Max trusted her with her life and with her crew. Arabella used her siren abilities to get them out of plenty of trouble. Occasionally to get them into some. When Max chose to retire from piracy, she left the ship with Arabella. They still cross paths every now and then. They still can’t agree on anything.

Boatswain - Fred - Fae

"Call me Fred. Like Winnifred.” The first thing she’d ever said to Max. Whatever Fred’s real name is, Max is sure it isn’t Winnifred. But it didn’t matter. What mattered was that she was a capable sailor and she was looking to cause trouble and saw this as her best option. The fae are finnicky, but Max knows Fred loved the crew-- she knows it because Fred checked in on Ash at least twice in the last two centuries, though neither have heard from her in at least 80 years. Their best guess is she’s gone back to the fae realm and lost track of time. They hope that’s the case anyway.

“Surgeon” - Maduka - Healer

Maduka was a friend of Ash’s before the pirate days and only joined the crew because Ash asked. But he was a talented healer and while healing isn’t outside of Ash’s magic, they wanted someone who was an expert. Maduka was the expert they desperately needed. He was arguably one of the most level headed members of the crew. Max hears he joined Doctors without Borders-- over and over under different names. She’s glad he’s still using his skills, and for arguably better causes.

Sailing Master - Sydney Walter Jones - Human

Syd wasn’t the only human ever on the crew, but it was rare. He made a shit deal with Fred that landed him as their sailing master. He was formerly a member of the British Royal Navy and Fred tricked him into gambling with her. He was fully, extremely human and had no idea what he was getting into. He hated it at first. Never wanted to be a pirate. But he was also extremely, incredibly gay, and when he realized that not a single person on the crew gave a shit about that, he warmed up to them a lot faster. He had a crush on Ash for a long time. He stayed on the crew longer than most others. When Ash and Max had both left, he was still there.

“Of course. I mean, I literally know Aphrodite and Eros, even if we’re not always on the best of terms. I think I’d still believe in it even without them, though. Maybe not in the way mortals do. I don’t think I believe there’s only one true love for everyone. Maybe that’s true for mortals, I can’t say. But I’ve been in love before and I’ll be in love again and it’s always different and unique and none of it is any less important or any less true because of the other times.”

Ash:

“...maybe? I don’t... I’m not sure, I guess. But I’m not sure about much. I used to, I think, when I was younger. Maybe it went with the optimism. I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of real life examples of it. I guess I wouldn’t rule out the possibility, but I don’t have a lot of hope for it.”

Beck:

“Love is... complicated, I think? I think true love exists, but I don’t think that means it’s easy, y’know? I think my parents are truly in love and they broke up. Mom left for a little while. But they tried again and they’re happy. I think a lot of people expect true love to not require any work or effort, but that’s not how relationships work. So yeah, I believe in it, but not like the fairytale kind. Happily ever after takes effort and that’s okay.”

Max:

“Abso-fucking-lutely. Which I know doesn’t exactly seem like a thing I’d be for, but that’s why assumptions make you an ass. But my parents were like... grossly in love. And Gael an’ Xal? Also stupidly in love, even if it took them like half a century to realize it. I dunno if true love’s for me, but I know that some people find it an’ they’re happy with it and I’d have to be an absolute dumbass to ignore the obvious evidence of it in my life.”

Max has disguised herself as a man a few times in her life, but it’s something she considered a last resort, to be used only when being a woman was absolutely 100% not going to get her her way.

In the early 1700s, under the name Maryanne Carver, Max spent about 15 years as a pirate, 11 of which had her captaining her own ship. Ashley was roped into being her first mate for those 11 years and she had him pose as captain during the times when being black/a woman/both meant that people refused to speak with her. Everyone on the crew, especially Ash, knew how ridiculous the idea of him as captain was, but it worked when it was needed. Her ship and crew spent the majority of their efforts fucking with the slave trade, doing what they could to slow that particular business, until her own ship was sunk and the majority of the crew was lost in the battle. She couldn’t find a another crew willing to risk their lives for a fairly charitable cause and take orders from a biracial, pansexual woman, so she was forced for find new ways to fuck up inequality. She and Ashley parted ways and this was the last time she saw him before he fell in love again and it broke him.

Max goes to Declan occasionally for recreational drugs because not a lot of people can help a vampire get high, but he’s found a way. They’ve also been high together once or twice.
