4. Nega Shantae

Shantae Series (2002)

So I really, really, reeeeeeeeeeally wanted to put her on this list...

 I was struggling to put the Half-Genie on here, but I also couldn’t think of a way to do it without using one of her transformations. And then it struck me. Well, technically, the dark magic struck Shantae, but same dealio. I slept in really late today, so I’m kinda surprised this turned out so well, considering I had to rush to have this Ret-2-Go before midnight (for me at least).

With us more than halfway through the month, and Halloween fast approaching, I decided to jump on to the daily art bandwagon with something a little different.

Raven

Teen Titans (2003)

Alright so...

The other day I was watching a movie, and instantly fell in love with one of the characters. It was at that moment, I realized that - when it comes to fictional characters, at least - I have a type. Pretty much all of my cartoon/video game crushes would loosely fall into the category of “gothic”. So, I decided to go back through all of my favorite games and shows and find all of the characters I’ve fallen in love with, whether I still love them or not.

Now, on to this girl specifically.

So, around the time I turned 3 - y’know, when you’re able to make memories, and talk, and have object permanence or something - this wonderful show, that you may have head of, came out called, and it was called: Teen Titans. Now, this show needs know introduction. Everyone knows it, everyone loves it, and if you don’t know it: watch it. If you don’t love it: Watch it again.

Anyways, this show was my introduction to pretty much everything I would later love.

Well animated action?

Thoroughly thought out characters, relationships, and motivations?

Goth girls?

Check. ✔ even though I didn’t really like Jinx too much

Seeing as my young mind connected with the childlike antics to the wonderful Beast Boy (Anyone who knows me can tell you that his “The ceiling” response to being asked “What’s up” has stuck with me to this day despite him saying it, like, once), it would soon come to be that I would find myself attracted to the same girl he was attracted to: Rae “Raven” Rae. And since then it’s stuck. And pretty much every character I’ve had a crush on since then has shared one or more traits with Raven. She started it all.

Disclaimer

Now, you may have noticed that so far, the characters I’ve drawn are characters I’m attracted to. These two are not on that list. These were filler sketches I made that fit the loose theme of “Goth.” They are children. I am an adult. In fact, I am almost twice their age! That would be gross.

So, for a while I thought it was ok for girls to be mean to you...

No seriously. I genuinely thought Mandy and Billy were a healthy relationship, because at that point on television, they were the only platonic boy/girl friendship between two protagonists. And then with how Gaz and Dib treated each other, it felt the same way. If Dib did something mean to Gaz, it would come back to bite him. If Gaz did something to him, it was important to returning things to the status quo. So, understandably, I just thought that if you were a boy, you were supposed to let girls walk all over you. And even though I know that’s not necessarily true... I still kinda have that mentality around women?

Not exactly, but...

 I live with my mom, most of my cousins are girls, all of my friends for a while were girls. I just have this deep seeded respect for the women. Anyways, isn’t it weird that you can have crushes on characters when you’re younger, because they’re most likely your age or older, but once you get old the idea of liking them just creeps you out? That’s the case with these two. When I first watched these shows, I was half their ages, but now, I’m twice that, and that’s creepy. Don’t have crushes on characters younger than you. Even if they’re fictional. That’s weird. But, in honor of my younger self who decided that the best take away from this is “Let girls be mean to you, it’s cute” I drew these two evil kids.

Gwen

Total Drama (2007)

This was quite the sadistic show, eh?

I remember watching this show and saying to myself “I’d totally love to do something like this if it weren’t at all as gross or scary.” I had quite a few reasons why I’d hate being on a show like this, but I also has some reasons as to why it might be fun. Gwen was one of those reasons. On a slightly less related topic, the art style took me forever to decipher, and the best thing I could rationalize from the character designs was: Gigantic hips. Skinny everything else

HOOOOOOLY HECK it has been a WHILE hasn’t it? Sorry about that. School got in the way, then my computer refused to start up (It’s not, I did this on my mom’s computer) and I just got hit with an giant wall of artist’s block. But after half a year (jeez) I’M BACK!
