Reread Hawk during exams, here’s my interpretation of her :)

i haven’t even read hawk yet but i already know i have a better concept for max and fang becoming parents 

and it sure as hell doesnt start when they’re fifteen. max had so many kids to take care of she doesn’t need a newborn too.

so lets set the scene: 8 years after the events of maximum ride forever. the nuclear winter is over. society is just beginning to rebuild itself.

with society comes the remnants of the whitecoats, trying to go back to experimenting. trying to recreate the successes of the flock, to have a foothold in the new world.

but they’re starting anew. they dont have any of their research, and its a mad scramble bc angel saw visions and the flock’s coming down hard after them.

by the time the flock catches up to them, 9 or 10 years after the events of the series, they only have one viable infant. the whitecoats are killed or imprisoned.

max looks at this baby girl, and remembers everything that happened to the flock- from the school to iggy’s parents treating him like a roadside attraction. she sees a chance to save a child that fate. her and fang take the child in. 

they name her Elle, after Ella. Max’s little sister. the first person outside the flock and the school to help her. angel makes plenty of jokes about being a big sister- after all, she was max’s little girl first.

max and fang are 25 years old, closer to 26. and they have this baby now, with goofy little chicken wings and big eyes that have never known fear. 

their daughter will never know fear, at least in her own home. she’ll grow up with her father pacing with her in his arms when she can’t sleep. she’ll grow up being cuddled close to her mother,  baking chocolate chip cookies together in the afternoon.

gazzy reads to her, because he does the best voices. angel helps talk her through when her thoughts try and overwhelm her. nudge shows her a dozen ways to do her hair and teaches her the lesson nudge fought so hard to learn- that there is nothing wrong with what you are, so long as who you are is someone who tries their best.

(nudge will quickly become elle’s closest confidante. every life event, every mistake, every triumph, nudge is there for her. nudge gets to give the support she wanted as a child).

iggy shows her how to cook, will come visit with food when max got distracted and overcooked something. 

elle grows up happy. she chases an aging total around the yard on chubby baby legs. she learns to cook and think things through, to protect herself and to reach out when others need it. she learns to love creativity and she learns to love herself.

and finally, the flock is together. no more separations.

Hot take but I always hated the updated Maximum Ride covers with the sharp typeface.

This never carried the personality of the books. It lied in this middle ground of being too clean, yet too odd and thrown together.

Now THIS was my shit. In hardcover the logo was always raised and felt so cool. Of course, it wasn't perfect, but it was so unique and lends itself to the "saving the world" aesthetic. I would wear this on a t shirt. Covers with this logo also were much more creative and didn't rely on Boring White People Standing Stoic at a Dutch Angle.

But shit like this gives me acid reflux. We don't talk about this

what kills me about hawk is that james patterson had the perfect opportunity to rewrite history and pretend that he didn't write a romance between two people who initially considered themselves siblings

BUT HE WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO BRING IT UP

LITERALLY ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS NOT MENTION IT BUT HE HAS MAX EXPLICITLY SAY IT

Just a few thoughts before I go to bed.

Are you seriously telling me that Hawk, who has a mohawk, multiple piercings and feathers tattooed above her eyebrows is straight!? Nothing about her seems straight to me.

Clete was VERY clearly meant to be autistic. But it didn’t feel like good representation. He was very cliched and was basically a stereotype. 

Max was in fucken prison??? For TEN YEARS????

Apparently Fang mercy killed a bunch of kids?

When they left Hawk, some chick they knew called Rose was supposed to come get her and was like ten feet away when Max & Fang left, but got hit & killed by a car literally seconds after they flew away?

Hawk has killed someone before the book even started.

Theres so much more to unpack in this garbage fire, but im super burned out from reading the stupid book and need time to process it, I guess?

I’ll probably post some more in the morning.
