Escaping from the School
Run! Run! Run! Hazel couldn’t believe she’d done it. That’d she’d managed to escape. She was running through the pitch-black forest as fast as she could. She had practiced flying a little at the School but she was too scared to start flying yet. What if she fell out of the sky? She was such a coward. She had been born with these wings but she was still too scared to use them. Maybe because at the School when the whitecoats wanted her to fly sometimes they’d used something to shock her so she’d fall down and hit the ground hard afterwards. She was so used to that happening she was scared of feeling that pain if she really truly tried to fly. If she fell high up in the sky, the pain might be even worse. Maybe she’d even die.
But she had to fly. If she didn’t fly, surely they would catch her. She had to do it. Even as scared as she was. Because she wanted to be free and because she never wanted too be hurt again. This was her only chance. She didn’t want to be experimented on anymore or get needles all the time. Tears stung in her eyes as she thought of the things that happened to her at the School. If I fly away they can’t hurt me anymore.
Taking a deep breath, she unfurled her wings slowly. They were hazel colored wings and that was why she had been named Hazel. She pushed down with her wings as hard as she could and then pulled them up and then pushed down again and soon she was off the ground and flying. She was so scared because as much as she enjoyed the feeling of flying she kept expecting to feel pain. But no pain came. Keep going. They can’t get you. You’re not in the School. Keep flying!
She flew higher and higher and she loved the feel of the wind in her feathers. She could see lots and lots of forest but somewhere far away in the distance she could see city lights. She had to go there. She had to get as far away from the School as she could. She didn’t know what she’d do when she got to the city but she’d think about that later. Right now she just had to think about getting away. So she flew in the direction of the city lights.
It felt like hours had gone by when she finally made it into the city. Her head hurt and she felt so dizzy, like the sky was spinning. Each stroke of her wings hurt and made her feel sick. She couldn’t fly much longer. She had to land somewhere. She went lower and lower and the amount of people around frightened her. She had to land somewhere where no one could see her. Even in the darkness if someone looked up they might see her and she didn’t know what would happen to her if someone saw her flying. Maybe they’d want to hurt her like the people at the School did. She lowered herself even more, seeing an alleyway and deciding that could be a good spot to land and rest. I feel so sick. I just have to hold on a little longer. I’ve made it so far!
But as continued to lower her vision began to get fuzzy and blurry and she felt even dizzier and her head hurt even worse. Her eyes rolled and she stopped moving her wings and began to fall. But she was so low to the ground now she didn’t fall far before she hit the top of a dumpster, letting out a little whimper of pain. She opened her eyes and found black edging on the corners of her vision. She lay on the top of the dumpster on her back, her hazel wings spread out for anyone to see. They’re going to get me again. I’m going to be hurt worse than ever. Maybe they’ll even put me down. At least I got to fly free for a little while… I never thought I’d get to do that. I hope there is a heaven for winged children. Maybe I can fly free there as much as I want forever. That was her lost thought before the winged child lost consciousness.
