Little Fallen Angel
I’m flying! I’m really, really flying in the sky! Hazel giggled happily as she flew through the air. She was pushing her angel white wings down and then pulling them up and then pushing them back down. She loved the feel of the wind on her skin and in her hair and wings and she stopped flapping to happily glide through the sky. She’d gotten to fly in Oscorp sometimes but mostly she wasn’t allowed to fly. Mostly she just always had to do tests and things. When she got to fly it was only ever in the building in the experiment rooms. Now she was actually flying free in the sky. She couldn’t believe she’d actually managed to slip out and get to the roof of the building. She had immediately run as fast as she could and unfurled her wings and flew up into the sky. Her wings came out through open slits in the back of her shirt. Oscorp had made all her shirts like that since she’d gotten her wings.
I can see everything in New York! She thought excitedly as she looked down below her. She flapped her wings up and down again so she could get even higher. It’s nighttime but everything is lit up! It’s beautiful! I can see all the buildings and all the cars and all the people! New York really is the city that never sleeps! She remembered hearing that saying before but only now did she really understand it and how amazing New York was.
She was so happy and excited she didn’t even notice the pain from her bruises. She had no idea where she was going to go now but she just knew one thing – she was free. No more tests, no more needles, no more being stuck in a cage; she was really truly free now. But Oscorp had been her home for so long. She wondered if she could go back to her real home but she knew she couldn’t. Her mommy and daddy had given her to Oscorp. She wondered if they missed her and felt bad for giving her away. But if they didn’t love me before they won’t love me now with my wings. She couldn’t go back to them. She didn’t have anyone to go back too.
She was no longer feeling so happy as she flew thinking about that. At least at Oscorp she had a home. Where was she going to go now? It doesn’t matter. I’ll keep flying and flying and get as far away from here as I can. And then I’ll think of what to do next. She rubbed away the tears that had pooled in her eyes thinking about her parents and noticed birds flying in formation a little way ahead of her. She was as free as they were now so she shouldn't be sad. This was her time to be happy because she was free. After all, how many little girls could fly like she could? No more thinking sad thoughts. Just keep flying. Hey that’s kind of like what Dory said from Finding Nemo. She thought, managing to giggle again. Except instead of just keep swimming its just keep flying!
Bang. Hazel suddenly heard a loud noise and then felt pain. Her shoulder was burning. She screamed in pain and stopped flying and began to drop. Her shoulder hurt so badly, she’d never felt pain like this before, even in the tests. She could see blood running down her shoulder and the sight of all the blood terrified her. She was falling really fast but she couldn’t move her wings, her shoulder hurt too much for her to focus on flying. She didn’t understand what had happened. She felt light-headed and dizzy, the world seemed like it was spinning as she fell. She could see everything around her moving fast but her vision was beginning to get blurry. She was going to fall all the way down to the ground and die. She wasn’t going to be free after all…
I hope if my wings make me like an angel, I go to heaven… She thought as she fell, darkness creeping into the edges of her vision…
