I’ve been a Tumblr witness to your journey under Boss. Can you share major milestones of your physical transformation? Commitments taken on, new habits incorporated, mental hurdles overcome? I remember you sharing that coworkers have remarked on the sense of purpose they see in you now. I would imagine they are processing the physical changes, as well.
The biggest thing I did was get moving. In 2016 I found myself unhappily overweight and almost completely sedentary. That Spring I bought a bike and started cycling every day. The first day I rode two miles and was legit terrified that I was having a heart attack. It was that bad. But the next day it was better, and then better again. My legs were sore for the entire first six weeks.
I continued my commitment to daily rides when I started serving Boss about halfway through that first six weeks, but now I had new motivation. I 100% would have stopped within a month if it hadn't been for Boss. I pedaled further and further not because he "made" me do it, but because he wanted me to better myself, and I wanted to make him happy. Also, I was motivated to feel better about what I was presenting to him and to myself. By the end of the summer I was cycling six days a week, up to 27 miles at a time. At the same time, I cut meal portions by a third and stopped eating fast food altogether.
I lost 30 pounds in six months. My face changed shape twice. It was weird.
In the three years since, I've cut another 20 pounds by taking up running, cutting carbs, cutting soda altogether, and otherwise improving my diet. Then I started going to the gym last summer and gained about 10 pounds back but in a good way. I still have too much of a gut, but not as bad as it used to be.
Oh, and my face changed shape again. It was, again, weird.
Mentally, the biggest hurdle is that I still don't feel like I "belong" in a gym. Boss gave me some tips to manage that stress. He's helped a lot. I wouldn't have survived the first few months or even weeks without Boss on my side.
As for people noticing, they mostly didn't. What people don't realize is that when you lose a lot of weight you can wear the same clothes for a long time, which masks the weight loss. By the time I started buying new clothes (two sizes smaller), I'd moved across the country. People who knew me as overweight weren't in the picture anymore, and people here didn't know me any other way.
There have been a couple instances of people noticing, though. Last fall a guy I used to date popped up on Facebook and asked what happened. And a few weeks ago my former manager stopped by my office and in the middle of the conversation raised his eyebrow and said, "Have you been working out? Sorry, I was just watching the gun show." That was pretty cool. I flexed a little more and pretended not to notice.
It's an amazing and super difficult journey, and a major example of how my submission to Boss has affected my everyday life. I recommend it to anyone.
