London’s Oldest Pubs Seen Through Artist’s Eyes: The Tale of Cut-Out Illustrations

Maxwell Tilse explores London’s historic pubs, just not the way you would have imagined. Get the adorable illustrations here!

The Sydney based illustrator indulges in intricate illustrations, all done in paint and ink sketches, and juxtaposes them in front of the architectural structure. And the result is a visual journal made with cut-out drawings that can keep tabs as to what he streets he has been strolling.

The 23-year old tries to capture the quintessentially beautiful British buildings through his this series, an architectural beauty that might be long forgotten by the ever-busy residents. Tilse emulates details such as the stained glass windows, the ornamental balconies, and Tudor style chimneys, staying as true to the original as possible. And the way he places his illustrations against the London pubs give it a quirky twist.

So far, Tilse has painted The Coach & Horses. Mayfair, The Old George. Bethnal Green, The Bricklayers Arms, Fitzrovia, The Dove. Hackney, The Crown. Covent Garden and many more and each one’s charm will make you notice these older pubs for sure the next time you are in the area.

Europe in Quick Sketches

The artist  is currently backpacking through Europe and takes us along with his journey through his beautiful illustrations, all done using quick pen sketches and muted watercolor washes. The scenic architecture of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the picturesque north of Charles Bridge in Prague, the mesmerizing Česky Krumlov Castle in Czech Republic, the wonderful Tiefer Graben and the Hohe Brücke (High Bridge) of Vienna, Tilse depicted them all in black ink.
