Happy (one day late) Birthday to Gunn Rose!

Everything is going great so far for the upgraded version April was a Fool! The current focus has been the soundtrack and the backgrounds to replace the old ones. Scythuz has finished the music, and I’ve got another 4 more backgrounds left. After that, we’ll be ready to move onto writing the new material! I’m excited :D

In April was a Fool, I was a bit confused with Erwin's bad ending. I figured that He believes May is April, and May goes with it. It felt a bit rushed, and I kinda wondered what actually happened. If that's all it is, I'm sorry for wasting your time!

No reason to apologize! It’s certainly not a waste of my time. :)

Spoilers for Erwin’s Bad ending in the ask and under the cut! (plus lots of text because I ramble a lot)

You have the just of it. May sees that Erwin is really slipping hard right here and she believes that the only way to save him from this and from everything else is to just accept that MAY can’t and only April can. So she tosses away her own identity in a last ditch effort to pull him out of Evil’s lies.

In many aspects of the story she struggles with the idea that she’s there to replace April, that May doesn’t and can’t have the same impact on these people as April did. Erwin’s past dwells on that the most.

This scene in the inn, she’s making a very direct comparison between herself and what she heard about April:

“I raise my hand, looking at it with slight disdain. Though I lived on a farm, my parents never had me do much manual labour; the skin on my hands is soft and spongy. Squinting, I try to imagine them worn and rough from holding a sword until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer.”

Erwin’s route is also the one where I feel the affection bar less means ‘affection’ and more means ‘trust’ and May’s own confidence in her ‘relationship’ with any given characters. (storywise, it’s really handled that way a lot more than ‘how much they like you’ in most cases)

“I lower my head slightly as he tucks my hair behind my ear. I understand now, there’s only one way to save him. It isn’t coincidence that has brought us together. It’s destiny: a destiny that I step in and fill the hole in his heart.”

If you get the bad ending, May doesn’t trust that she herself is someone capable of saving Erwin from Evil.

All that being said, it’s important to note that they BOTH know she’s not April. That’s what this line was for:

He reaches out, pulling the hair that is tucked neatly behind my one ear loose.Erwin: “I’m sorry I’ve hurt you so much.”

To establish that even Erwin realizes that deep down this isn’t right; she’s not April. But it’s by May’s own assurance:

“I reach up, tucking it back in place. It belongs there now. He seems troubled by the response, unsure what to do next.“

They are both willing to fall into this delusion and see it through. What fallout will that have? You’ll all see ;D

I’ll certainly look into the writing at that though. There is a good chance that the scene might be rushed. Unfortunately, making a game in three months does that. (In particular, the drop out of the other party members in the scene didn’t come off as elegantly as it did in my head. It was supposed to give the feeling that Erwin and May were shutting them out one by one and drawing into their own little world.)

What are the differences in appearance with May and April? Or are they completely identical?

In terms of how I draw them, they are identical (minus how they style their hair); mind you, they would have slight differences just from life experiences. As mentioned in game, April’s hands were pretty calloused, but May’s are not. April would have more muscle than May as well, since she spent her time swinging around swords. Not that May doesn’t have muscle! She’s from a farm family afterall, but she was never expected to help out very much.

Personally, I would picture April a tiny bit taller than May as well, but that’s just my own thing lol I have no desire to say “That’s canon!” I also tend to draw a bit more lip on May.

Goal - draw everyone something like this for their birthday. I threw this up on the society6 account too, in case anyone is interested!

I was listening to Indra's playthrough of April was a Fool, and May blatantly flirting on Gabby was not a thing I knew I waned until I got it.

It was really hard to pick just one line from that masterpiece hahaha
