Took a Dose of Morphine - New Cases of Dengue - Tried Their New Hose

TOOK COLD “PISEN.” AN INMATE OF MAY TOBIN’S ATTEMPTS TO SHUFFLE OFF THE MORTAL COIL.

May Tobin’s establishment was the scene of considerable excitement Wednesday evening, but it was hushed up until last night, when a Statesman prowler browsing around ran afoul of it. Dell Campell, so it is said, angered and forlorn over the abandonment of her lover, took a big dose of morphine, with suicidal intent. Dr. Graves was called and succeeded in pumping it out, and as Dell’s lover returned Thursday night she is up and happy(?) again.

RECENT NOTEWORTHY HAPPENINGS.

Several new cases of dengue fever were reported in the city this morning.

The members of the East Austin Hose Fire company turned out in a body last evening at 6:30 o’clock, and tried their new hose for the first time. The experiment was witnessed by a goodly number of people, who were more than pleased with the exhibition.

Motion for New Trial

DISTRICT COURT.

The motion for a new trial in the Phillips case was argued yesterday by Major Walton for the defense and District Attorney Robertson for the state, and held for decision Monday. Major Walton argued that the testimony of May Tobin and others should not have been admitted, as the prosecution failed to show that Mr. Phillips had any knowledge of Mrs. Phillps’ infidelity to him, the testimony having been admitted under the assurance of the prosecution that Phillips’ knowledge of his wife’s conduct would be established, which was not done. This and other points were ably argued.
