Gaige had long since given up trying to figure out what was what in this hellhole. What was once the grand, bizarre city she’d wound up in for no reason had become a collapsed industrial wasteland. What was left of the once colorful Spirale seemed perpetually cloaked in a thick smog, not heavy enough to choke her yet but still making her breathing far more of a difficulty than she was comfortable with. Parts of the ground had fallen in and taken buildings with them, cars were abandoned and overturned- things were overall far from okay.
And then there were the monsters. Though their behavior was somewhat familiar- some prowled about on all fours, others slithered up from the cracks in the ground, and still more appeared almost human- they were all static-y and didn’t even seem like they had real physical form. Of course, then a woman she’d spoken to was pounced upon by one of the dog-like beasts, the tearing of her shoulder wrenching a spine-chilling scream from her. These things were very real, and only she could see them. Naturally Gaige pulled out her gun and fired at the thing as a reflex... only, wait, that’s right. Unlike the monsters, her gun was very not real. It was a FUCKING BB GUN. And while she hadn’t managed to kill the thing because of course she didn’t, she’d definitely drawn its ire, as well as that of a few of its companions that were nearby.
After everything she’d been through in her life, running like hell made her feel SO lame. Even so, she’d only barely managed to get enough time for a headstart after keeping them at bay with her metal arm and some “creative” use of her hammer. The shots she’d fired back at them as she ran had almost no effect, too- they didn’t even have any eyes for her to hit to at least stun them for a while. It seemed like running was about the only option she had for now, and based on how closer the growling was getting, that would only be the case for so much longer.
Wait, strike that. Having desperately darted around a corner, she realized all too late she was running right down an alley at the end of which lay the wall of a short building. She was too close by this point for a running start, and while climbing it was probably doable, she’d likely lose at least one if not both of her ankles with the time it’d take, which would certainly leave her a dead girl wal- ...crawling. Swallowing thickly, the mechromancer turned to face her adversaries. A pack of about four of the canine monsters had her cornered, slowly prowling forward with the smugness of beasts preparing to enjoy a nice, worn-out meal.
“...Alright, SCREW it!” she’d hoarsely shout, not so much to scare the beasts but to psyche herself up in the moments before her hideous maiming. She threw her metal arm up in front of her, the air distorting and warbling in front of her as her now-diminutive companion was summoned. While Deathtrap’s eye began to glow with the charge of an incoming laser, Gaige started firing her ultimately pathetic gun at the monsters, hammer ready in her other hand. “Give ‘em all the hell we’ve got left in us, boy!” One more shout to give herself all the confidence she needed to not just lay down and die.
But god could she use some help to give her all the firepower she needed to not die period.
