Cal Posts Fourth-Best Score In Program History To Win At OSU

Bears Win, 197.425-196.200 to Stay Unbeaten

CORVALLIS – California women's gymnastics stayed unbeaten on the season as they claimed a season-best score of 197.425 to defeat Oregon State. The Beavers also tallied a season-high total of 196.200, but it was no match for the Bears who totaled the fourth-highest team score in program history and a mark bettered by only four schools this year. Cal won on the road to move to 4-0 on the season while Oregon State dropped to 2-3. "The gymnastics was great tonight," co-head coach Justin Howell said. "The confidence level and energy keep getting better every single week. That's what is most fun to see, those stuck landings are infectious. They train like that in the gym, and it was so great to see them execute today." Cal opened the meet by tying for the second-best bars score in school history with a 49.550. The first five Bears all recorded at least a 9.90 score as Cal tied for the second-best score in the nation so far this season. Nevaeh DeSouza, Andi Li and Kyana George were the first three gymnasts and they all recorded a 9.90, with DeSouza and George equaling career highs. Nina Schankand Maya Bordas followed with twin 9.925 scores. The team uneven bars score trails only a 49.575, which Cal recorded vs. Stanford on January 19 last year and at the 2019 NCAA regionals. "One thing that is so great in our bar lineup, every single person can stick a dismount consistently," Howell said. "(Assistant coach) Janelle (McDonald) has been working on hitting their handstand lines and sticking landings. The first three people are able to stick, then everyone is able to feed off that energy and excitement and set the tone for the meet." George was a standout all evening for the Bears as she won the all-around with the fifth-highest score in the nation this year, with a 39.650. That score was also the third-highest all-around score in school history. George notched scores of 9.90 on the bars and floor and tallied 9.925 marks on both the vault and beam. She tied career highs on the vault, bars, beam and the all-around in a comprehensive performance. She won the vault, beam and all-around competitions. "Kyana was on-fire tonight, being an all-around is a hard job week-in and week-out, but Kyana is so efficient and consistent," Howell said. "She tried out a beam routine that was new for her, she had a couple of changes, and she competed with confidence and handled it really well. Kyana is absolutely performing, and is chasing perfection every weekend, tonight was one of those unbelievably beautiful performances." Schank continued the Bears' momentum in the second rotation as she opened the team's vault rotation with a career-high 9.900 score to take second place. The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, Andi Li, took fourth in her first career collegiate vault, she recorded a 9.875. Li had three events that finished at 9.85 or above as she also scored in the bars and beam lineups. Bordas took second place in the all-around with a 39.475 score. She set season highs on the beam, bars and all-around, recording a 9.925 on the bars and a 9.90 on the beam. Grace Quinn equaled a career-high on the floor exercise with a 9.875 as she finished fourth. Maya Green also tallied a 9.875 in her first collegiate floor routine. "Maya Green did a beautiful floor routine, jumping into the anchor spot on short-notice," Howell said. "She's been training in the gym and she's been waiting on this moment. She's a beautiful dancer and a beautiful performer; it's not just the gymnastics skills, it's also the dancing, the movement and the quality. It's really fun to watch."
