7.16.2017 12:38 PM CEST (6:38 AM EST): My last full day here in Solsona, Spain! And another spread finished, another spread started. I promise the coming week’s will fill up much more nicely as I get settled back home and have all my art tools at my disposal.

So much to do, so much to prepare. I am very excited to show my exchange sister my city and do so many things with her, but I also know there’s work to be done. I have 3 and a half weeks until school starts, and my brain is already in scheduling and scholarship-applying year. Thanks to this exchange, I have the confidence to make this year a wonderful one, and to stay on top of things. I have matured so much in 3 weeks that high school seems to be backtracking, but I do need this year to be thoroughly prepared (and above and  beyond) for college. IB, you will not break my spirit!

- similar spelling, different meaning

This is the first post on what (I hope) will become a series for you guys. I’m learning Spanish (and I’m currently in Spain on exchange) and as I speak with natives I consistently find that one little slip of my tongue can change the meaning very easily. I want to share these similar vocabulary words for my own and others’ benefits!

So, my first post: sentarse vs sentirse.

The difference between these two words is only a letter, but it has a serious impact.

The reflexive verb sentarse is used when someone sits themselves down.  The non-reflexive verb sentar is used when you guide someone else to sit down.

The reflexive verb sentirse is used when you feel something in regards to your emotions or mental state. The non-reflexive verb sentir is used when you feel something texture-wise. 

Both verbs change their “e” stem to “ie” in the present tense. Unfortunately, their “yo” forms are identical, so context is important. 

Me siento en una silla. I sit in a chair. 

Me siento cansada. I feel tired. 

Te sientas a mi lado. You sit next to me. 

Te sientes contenta. You feel happy.
