Your Sky: It Seems I Wanted a 2gether Retread

I watched this on a whim yesterday evening and enjoyed it immensely. Not to be the Boss Baby tweet, but I enjoyed how this show set up some of the same parameters as 2gether without making key characters unlikable, or relying on mean humor.

Right off the bat they calibrated the Teerak character well. He's essentially an adorable younger brother all the time. He's clearly coddled, and requires a lot of supervision. However, they made sure to confirm that he's actually an extremely kind character, and that most of his adventures result from him maybe going too far to complete an act of kindness. This character has real potential to be annoying, and they're doing a great job with the line.

Additionally, they've given Teerak a great supporting cast around him. I liked the teamwork dynamics between Lee, Joy, and Type. I liked seeing them fulfill different roles in the group, and I'm excited to get to know them more. Teerak's relationship with Babe is also compelling; I'm excited to see what we get from a caring big sister. I especially loved their meeting the laundromat owner. I hope we see more of her, and that they continue the trend of introducing every new character with a beauty zoom.

Thomas Teetut is also doing a great job with Muenfah. He's playing this character so differently from Gun in The Middleman's Love that I didn't even recognize him right away.

Unlike with Sarawat (2gether), they didn't withhold this character's affection for Teerak for multiple episodes. Like Sarawat, they've gone for cool, aloof, and disinterested in women. I'm curious to learn how long he's had this crush, why he hasn't said anything about it, and why his brother (Lee) is keeping the confidence about it.

I also want to know whose ass he kicked years ago that created this reputation about him being leader of a gang. It's intriguing because we watched multiple people running interference on Oh's pursuit of Teerak. I was wondering at first if Teerak needed to properly reject this man, but based on Oh stealing the outdoor reservation at this restaurant, drugging Teerak's friends, and trying to fight Muenfah, I really don't like this man. They did a great job building to the reveal that Oh ain't shit. They made me feel bad for a Mike character at first, and then validated why I instinctively do not like that man's characters.

I really like the impetus for the fake dating in this one. I like that Muenfah pulled Teerak out of a dangerous situation, and also that a drunk Teerak created a major misunderstanding online from people stalking (please stop filming people in public). It's so much better than we know Muenfah has feelings for Teerak already, and has been protective of him. I'm excited to see how Teerak grows into a shared affection, and how the veneer of fake dating complicates the development of their feelings.

Also, this show is beautiful. Sarawut Chuparkpanich shows always look great. However, every single person linked on the crew has been part of projects that I think showed real potential before flopping badly before even the midpoint. I don't want to get my hopes up too much because of the track record, but damn did I really like this first episode. This is the most engaged with initial characterization I've been with a Thai BL in months, so I hope this one works out. I am still fond of 2gether, despite the missteps of that show, so I'd like to have a better version of it.

I'll pick this up as a regular watch and check in after a few weeks to let you know how I'm feeling about it. Thank you to the gifmakers!

- i feel sean would have already known the difference between alt subcultures way before meeting you. he’s definitely a breath of fresh air because you don’t have to explain anything to him. in fact, he’d probably indulge in some goth music! the cure and the velvet underground more specifically.

- lovesong and just like heaven is ur guys’ SHITTTTT

- sean stares in awe when you do goth makeup. he’ll always be impressed by any sharp contour/eyeliner you do. you ask him if you can do it on him and he gets nervous and says no 😭.

- he’d be slightly influenced into getting a piercing with you! i feel he’s a septum guy… or hear me out BRIDGE PIERCING!!!

- sean says “so cool” under his breath to literally anything you do that expresses yourself in any way at all.

- daniel is just as interested in your whole style. when sean brings you over, daniel just ogles and asks you question upon question. he’ll ask you to do the same makeup on him but for his superhero purposes LMAO.

- when meeting esteban, he’d ask similar questions:

- “so… what’s with the vampire get-up?”

- “dad… stop…”

- sean gets so embarrassed and he apologizes profusely. you probably don’t care as much as sean thinks you do 😭 he takes that shit serious!!

- getting black/dark wine lipstick all over him… esteban also has something to say about that.

- sean does your photoshoots when you’re all dressed up and he loves it. he’s a little nerd—sketches all your cool outfits.

- not only that, but he also sketches potential matching tattoo ideas for the two of you. they all pertain to your style/subculture.

I don't think I've talked about my QL firsts before. Instead of a strict chronology, I'll go about it in a way that lets me talk about shows that feel like the first of a kind to me :)

The actual 1st QL: Word of Honour

This marked my crazy, beautiful, mind-boggling entry into the world of QL, in 2021. I actually can't think of a better start, because after years of being in English language media, it took me back to the familiar flair and drama of my roots aka desi TV serials and cinema. Everything was over the top and I was obsessed. It took quite a while for me to fully appreciate the storytelling at work because I was so unfamiliar with the literacy needed to really understand Wuxia, but with the help of fandom and more dramas, I got there. The devastating apparent ending and then the Secret Good Ending rewired my whole brain. The little found family was everything to me. This was what led me to all things MXTX, Danmei, and then Cdramas in general. I lived there for quite a while before coming back to QL, and still watch quite a lot of Wuxia and historical Cdramas.

My Love Mix-Up! (Kieta Hatsukoi)

To be fair, this wasn't my first Japanese BL. I watched Cherry Magic before this and enjoyed it well enough, but this was the one that dragged me into Japnanese QL in a choke hold. I adored every single one of these earnest kids, especially Ida's incredibly aroace confusions, and then found out how much variety there is when I looked for more. This eventually led to watching Old Fashion Cupcake, Tsukutabe, Bokura no Shokutaku, and lots more.

Yuri!!! on Ice

The one and only QL anime I've watched! It's a masterpiece, and I'm still in love with the Yuris. The blend of sports with romance was so perfectly done. I watched it around 2021, and I will mourn the loss of Ice Adolescence forever.

She Loves to Cook and She Loves To Eat

My first ever GL and I adore it to bits. I'm somehow way pickier with GL than I am with BL, and haven't really dug myself into the surge of the last year, but I think this will forever stay a favourite. It's so comforting, and at the same time so strong in it's rejection of the norms around being a woman, of what a family can look like, of what a relationship can be. It's the warmest hug and the firmest reminder to never stop trying to build the life you want. I have so much more Yuri on my list to get to!

What Did You Eat Yesterday?

My first QL with characters who can actually be called middle-aged! There is very little old man yaoi to go about, and I'm no incredibly happy that his exists. It's also unique in its slice-of-life kind of approach, and I can sit forever watching Shiro and Kenji keep figuring out life and each other.

2gether and Bad Buddy

My first Thai BLs! Technically my first one was 2gether, but I bounced very hard off it. Didn't even end up watching the movie and the second season, and didn't really come back to Thai QL at all for around 2 years. Then in 2023, I watched Bad Buddy. I was smitten immediately, and dove right into the sea of Thai QL. My first shows after this were Moonlight Chicken, 3 Will Be Free, and The Warp Effect, all of which I ADORED.

Marahuyo Project

My first Filipino QL. It made me laugh and cry and told me a story of so much hope despite it all, and it made me braver too. This one is really personal. Adrian Lindayag is so good as King! If there's one show on this list I could make everyone watch, this would be it. I haven't gotten around to watching more Filipino stuff, but I intend to finish Gaya Sa Pelikula soon, and Gameboys and Rainbow Prince are also on my list!

Clairebell

This one has to be the most recent show on this list. Like I mentioned, I'm pickier about GL somehow, and as much as I love the boom, a lot of the GL coming out of Thailand lately isn't up my alley (well, that's true even for a lot of the BL nowadays but that's a different discussion). Clairebell is the first Thai GL that I devoured in one sitting and enjoyed every single moment of! The production quality is great but that's not why; I've watched and loved many shows with the budget of a shoestring. It was just great to have a story about so many women navigating this space of the prison without reducing even a single one to a hapless victim. They are all people who take charge of their lives and make active choices all the time. One of the choices being arson! Excellent.

It went well over 5 shows, but this is the best I could manage! Tagging everyone who sees this on the dash and wants to share (Please tag me if you do, I'd love to know <3)

Okay, I don’t like datas, but at the same time, I somehow ended on insta and looked at GMMTV boys’ followers count. Only Win, Dew, Tay, Gun, Nanon and Ohm Pawat have more followers than Pond and Phuwin (who have the same). I know they’re just numbers, but how can people still doubt PondPhuwin’s power is beyond me. If we look at it that way, right now, it’s proved that they are not only GMMTV’s it couple, but most successful cp, too. (Not just because of this numbers, ofc.) Which makes me really happy, because they deserve all the love. I just wish GMMTV could protect them from unnecessary drama and hateful people.

i, for one, love data, hence all my numbers posts i love doing, but yeah. pondphuwin are undeniably the it gmmtv cp right now. for many reasons. i mean, MaT is the first gmmtv bl that conquered 2gether's numbers as well, so many years later. i don't think some people are necessarily doubting ppw's success though, more just... don't like it very much? disagree with it? or just consider them very 'mainstream' rather than actually the most deserving of success.

regardless, my favourite thing about the numbers is that ppw are one of the few cps that actually have the same number of followers. you would think phuwin would maybe have more because of his many projects outside of bls or more people would maybe follow pond because everyone got kind of obsessed with thee specifically, but no. we've been reaching the same follower milestones at almost the exact same time for ages now. that's really cool.
