Also, a fun fact about the Japanese translation: apparently, ART was originally written with a gruff old-man way of speaking, but later revised into the shrewd older-lady style it has now.

もしそのままのおっさん口調だったら日本におけるファンダムでのARTのイメージがどうであったかを考えるのは楽しい思考実験かもしれません。

It’s kind of fun to think about what ART’s image in Japanese fandom might have been if that gruff old-man speaking style had stayed.

I also got to hear a lot of interesting things during the interview at Hal-con, but I’m guessing other people who took better notes will probably talk about that more. I missed my chance to take notes, so if anyone out there has more details, I’m… looking to… you… all.

In English, it is “you” 99.9% of the time, but in the remaining 0.1% of the time, it is used as “dear,” “darling,” or “sweet”… It is strange when I look at it again.) system collapseの日本語訳版を買って、4時間ぶっ続けで読んで、いま読み終わった‼️‼️最高‼️‼️

I bought the Japanese translation of system collapse, read it for 4 hours straight, and just finished it ‼️‼️ best ‼️‼️

日本語版のsystem collapseは冒頭に翻訳者と出版社が共同で編集した「よくわかるnetwork effectのあらすじ」的なものが付いてておもしろかったです。

The Japanese version of system collapse is interesting because it has a "easy synopsis of network effect" at the beginning, which was edited jointly by the translator and the publisher.

各登場人物間の関係の変化にめちゃくちゃ気を取られていて各企業の動静がぜんぜんふわっとしか理解できてなかったな…というところもありましたし❗️

I was so distracted by the changing relationships between the characters that I only had a vague understanding of the dynamics of each company... ❗️

ラッティの悲鳴とかARTからアイリスに対する二人称とか、翻訳されることによって生じる　なんというか　2次的な好ましい要素？というのもこの作品でつとに感じて面白いですね　そう訳すんだ⁉️みたいなのを日本語訳のみ読んでいる段階でもう感じるというか

The scene in ART where the drone clings to MB with two arms, I feel a slight correspondence with the scene in NE where MB wants to hold up the drone and pour out its feelings like the silly humans ⁉️ and all that stuff, i should sleep well and wake up and read it again and go through the original text as well.

That's right, this sentence was written in Japanese and then foolishly plugged into a translator, so it probably doesn't match the expression in the original language!

マーダーボットの日本語訳を担当されている中原尚哉さんが日本語版出版社(東京創元社)のインタビューに答えていたのですが(2022)

Naoya Nakahara, who is in charge of translating Murderbot into Japanese, was interviewed by the publisher of the Japanese edition (Tokyo Sogensha) (2022).

この作品を訳すとき気を付けていることは～みたいな話の流れから、"マーダーボットは古典的なツンデレである"認識のもとに翻訳をしているという話をしていました

They were talking about what he was careful about when translating this work, and he said that he was translating with the understanding that "Murderbot is a classic TSUNDERE".

ツンデレというのはあれです　内面的には相手の存在を受容しているのだけれど自分でもそのことについて認め切ることができず親しい態度をとることに強い抵抗を感じたりその逆の態度を取ってしまったりする/あるいは基本的な態度は険しいもの=ツンであるが、親しい相手にはデレ＝柔和で甘い対応を行う萌えキャラクターの属性を表す言葉です　後者が原義ですね

"Tsundere" is a term that describes the attribute of a moe character who is internally accepting of the other person's existence, but is unable to fully admit it to themselves and feels a strong resistance to being friendly and behaves badly/ or whose basic attitude is rugged = [tsun], but who responds in a [dere] = soft and sweet manner to close relations. The latter is the original meaning.

邦訳版マーダーボットダイアリーはmurderbotに"弊機"というすばらしい一人称をつけたけど、この弊機という語についてどう説明すればいいか難しいな…

The Japanese translation of the Murderbot Diaries gives murderbot the wonderful first person "弊機", but it's hard to explain the word "弊機"...

翻訳機にかけても"my machine"としか出てこないんですけど、ぜんぜん違うんですよ　Iの訳語であることは確かで

When I put it into the translator, it just says "my machine", but that's not the same mean at all. I'm pretty sure it's a translation of "I".

3号の"貴機(=マーダーボットに対してのYouの訳語)"についても！

I'm also interested in the use of "貴機" (the translation of "you" for Murderbot by Three)!

弊社/貴社と明らかな対応関係なんだけど、そもそも英語には 自分の会社をへりくだって言う敬語/相手の会社を尊敬して言う敬語 にあたる言葉そのものが存在しない！

It's a word that has an obvious correspondence to 弊社(our company)/貴社(your company). In the first place, in English, there is no word itself that corresponds to the honorifics used for humbling one's own company/respecting the other company. There is no word that can express it in one word!

弊は自分に帰属するものについてへりくだって付けることばで、機はmachineだよね

なんとかしてRogue Protocol : chapter1の ”I really missed ART.”を見たときに私がどんなにびっくりしたかを説明したい…うまくいかないかもしれないが…

原語版のRogue Protocolを読むきっかけになった一節でもあります。

wikiでは各キャラクターの個別記事の冒頭で作中の文章が引用されているじゃないですか。

そこで"I really missed ART."を見て椅子ごとひっくり返ったんですよ。そのままkindleでRogue Protocolを買って確かめました。(当然)そのように書かれています。

Then I saw "I really missed ART." and I flipped over with my chair. I went straight to my kindle and bought Rogue Protocol（English） to check it out.(Naturally) it is written that way.

"miss"が合いたいと思う気持ち/懐かしむ気持ち/後ろを振り返って惹かれるような気持ちを表すものだとは知っているんですけど、"I really missed ART."を翻訳機にかけると"ARTが本当に恋しいです"になるんですね。

I know that "miss" expresses a feeling of wanting to be together, a feeling of nostalgia, a feeling of looking back and being attracted to someone, but when I put "I really missed ART." through a translator, it becomes "ARTが本当に恋しいです".

また説明が難しいんですけど……

日本語の｢恋しい｣は、a long for.../miss...の意味と、dear/dearest/sweet/darling/belovedの意味、両方を持ちます。

The Japanese word "恋しい" is a long for... /miss... and also has the meanings of dear/dearest/sweet/darling/beloved.

つまり、めちゃくちゃmurderbotがARTのことだいすきじゃん！？どうした！？？とすごいビックリしたんですね。

「だいすき」にも色々あるのでDeepLの前で唸っているのですが。love,like,favor,intimate,affection,care about...

In other words, murderbot is だいすき ART so much! What's wrong? I was so surprised.

もちろん単語の意味を把握しきれていなくて辞書通り訳したまま実状より甘ったるく読んでしまっているのですが。日本語版でそのような描写を見た覚えがなかったんです。

If this were left as it is, "弊機はARTが恋しいです", we would all collapse with foam coming out of our mouths. It might follow the transmitter it got and go to meet ART again. They are too friendly for those who did not go through the Network Effect.

その後、あれらの関係性について気になり、fandom wikiを見ながらFeelings REDACTED:を読んでPodcastのインタビューを聴き、無事めちゃくちゃになってしまいました。

Then I was curious about the relationship between those things, so I looked at the fandom wiki, read Feelings REDACTED: and listened to the podcast interview, and my organic tissue brain went into chaos.

Loveらしいですね、なんか。LOVEって愛と訳せるあれで合ってますか？

Their relationship seems to be 𝓛𝓞𝓥𝓔.

Is that 𝓛𝓞𝓥𝓔 correct, that 𝓛𝓞𝓥𝓔 which can be translated as 愛?
