Things I think Merrilee Donner might have experienced because I hate myself
• Avoids mirrors for a long, long time after her sister died.
• Her parents probably avoid looking at her directly or making direct eye contact with her. It's just too painful to look at her, REALLY look at her
• She cuts her hair into a short bob Just so she could stand looking at herself without wanting to cry.
• Does anything she can to avoid having to stand on stage next to her husband on reaping day, because sometimes (when he's the exact right combination of only slightly sober) Haymitch sees her on stage and gives her this look that she just doesn't know what to do with.
• Resents every wrinkle or sign of aging. Not because she cares about aging. But because she has to wonder "is this how Maysilee would have looked, too?"
CANARY DANCE
Summary: Katniss Everdeen always fancied Peeta Mellark. Now that she had phased out of the Reaping, she decides to take a chance at the Canary Dance. However, happily ever after comes at a cost.
Chapter 2 Summary: Oh, what a night… the Canary sang, and Katniss and Peeta woke up naked, and they have to face the consequences of their actions.
A/N: Set in canon divergence universe - a this would have happened anyway trope...thank you to my beta @norbertsmom, you're a real gem 💗 you!

“Are you okay?” Peeta shuffled forward.
Katniss shrieked when she realized that she was naked. She gathered the sheets about her. “STOP LOOKING AT ME!” She growled, throwing the pillows at him, one after another.
Peeta easily caught them. “Katniss, stop, please…”
Peeta looked so helpless holding all the pillows. Katniss pulled back, a scowl firmly on her face. “What did you do to me last night?” Her head pounded.
He slid to the floor, gripping a pillow. “To be honest, I don’t remember. I woke up next to you in this house.”
At the mention of the house, Katniss looked at her surroundings. The whitewashed room was not a house you would find in the Seam. She assumed this was a home near the center of town. “This isn’t your room?”
“No,” Peeta sighed, rubbing his face. “I thought it was your…” his eyes focused on something on the floor.
“What are you doing?”
Peeta crawled on the floor. Katniss looked over the side of the bed to see him grabbing papers from underneath the bed. It was then she saw the plate of toasted bread with two bites missing, next to an empty bottle. She felt faint as it dawned on her what they might have done. “No,” the whispered words slipped from her mouth like a prayer.

Mr. Donner was set to become the mayor after mayor allister:
The crowd’s reacting again, but more in surprise than anger, because Maysilee is a purebred town girl and about as highfalutin as they come, what with the Donners being merchants and the general consensus being that her pa will be tapped to succeed Mayor Allister.
So Merrilee must've liked being part of the mayoral family so much she either married an up-and-coming candidate within eight years after Maysilee died
(Madge was in Katniss's year at school, so I'm assuming she's also 16, meaning she was born year 58. I assume they were married before having her, from peeta's insistence of marriage before baby as a cultural benchmark. I also assumed Madge was born as the daughter of a current mayor, though I left this out, as there's no substantial evidence)
or her father was so incredibly corrupt and pro-capitol he got to stay in the position for at least a decade and choose his replacement:
The mayor tries for a neutral tone, but her voice leaks disapproval in a way that guarantees she’ll be replaced soon. The decent mayors always are.
Or, Merrilee just ended up married to the future mayor, and her headaches were from "not this shit again".

Growing up in the mayor’s house, Madge Undersee learned how to keep quiet. At thirteen years old, she thought she understood why.
She didn’t.

gothic horror for @thghorrorcollection
I'm rereading the Hunger Games trilogy and in the first book, when Katniss is talking to Rue and learns about the whippings she tells the reader "Besides, our mayor, Madge's father, doesn't seem to have much taste for such events." When describing the lack of whippings in District 12. Katniss chalks this up to being because District 12 is the worst district and ignored by the Capitol so there's no point. Know we know it's likely because of his wife's sister being put in the Hunger Games. Sure, we learned this in Catching Fire. But I think Sunrise on the Reaping adds another layer to it since I'm sure they know what happened to Haymitch. They might even know Katniss's connection to him. Hence Madge's insistence that she wear the Mockingjay pin, knowing it's a piece of rebellion. I know they also end up staging whippings and the like in Catching Fire, but I'm positive the Undersees didn't have any say. Especially knowing that the Mayor himself was part of the rebellion. I also think Merrilee would really not be able to handle her husband encouraging the punishment.
One thing I've never seen discussed is that 12 is a coastal district. Like imagine the potential of someone wandering far enough and discovering the Atlantic Ocean?
