Do the Jellyfish pirates have a jolly roger?

I'm not sure if this is the jolly roger. I see it more of the logo of the Mayship II than a jolly roger. Adding a read more since it's a bit long

The only jolly roger skull like thing I could find were these…

The skull carpet under the table.

The skull on the back of the chair.

The skull shown on Sephy and Leap's Vastedge concept art.

(all have a similar design, excluding Leap, where the skull is in a circle with a gray outline like a porthole and instead of bones it looks more like a wrench or screw sticking out of said outline)

And this skull shown on the back of Arisugawa

While it is a typical jolly roger with no cross bone. I see it more as a roger for the animals only type of thing idk just vibes.

(even tho Goshogawara has a different skull on his eyepatch)

Or at the end, could just be the skull on their hats.

(even tho March has different one)

I personally like the porthole jolly roger out of the bunch

but idk if there is an official one or not, so if you want, choose the one you think is the jolly roger or just one you liked

Was showing off GGXX ACORE R to friends, and we got to the Jellyfish Pirates stage. We noticed the background pirates looked like the characters from Magica Madoka. Is that some sort of coincidence or an intentional homage?

Depends on what version of the stage you’re looking at.

GG1 version of course is pretty basic and doesn’t reference anything at all.

GGXPlus (GGX base) has its own basic version that also doesn’t reference anything.

GGXX (base GGXX) also didn’t have any reference to much either.

What you probably saw was the #Reload/Slash version of the stage, if I’m not mistaken.  Most likely it was intentional.

And lastly there’s the version of the stage made exclusively for Accent Core (please note that Accent Core Plus R patched its stages to make the game more stable, so certain features in Plus R may be missing compared to the original PS2 version of Accent Core/Accent Core Plus).  I think the ACPlus version references Haruhi Suzumiya.

GGXrd Sign version of Mayship II is the first time we actually “see” the real canonical crew of the Jellyfish.  Prior to that we only ever saw the “real crew” on May Beach in Guilty Gear Isuka.

GGXrd Revelator also showcases the real crew.

Typically when GG references other anime directly when it comes to visuals, there’s two reasons:

1. It’s popular enough of a series that ARCSys pays tribute if it’s currently “trending” in Arcades/entertainment scene.

2. It’s a collaboration/crossover “event” (like with the M.O.M. items you obtain in Revelator from Border Break X Zero).

Is it true that Johnny acquired the original Mayship from Zepp? And if this is true, did they procure through theft or did he get it from Gabriel?

Unfortunately there’s nothing to indicate where Johnny got the Mayship… though it was supposedly built by Novel, the ship’s engineer.

The actual airship parts may have been cobbled together, donated, OR stolen (or all of the above, since they are pirates).

The very idea of Johnny having connections with Zepp seems possible, but also very shaky and unconfirmed, since he is a wanted criminal.

Suffice to say there’s no confirmed official info, either way.

What happened to the original Mayship? In Guilty Gear Xrd, May's stage is called Mayship II, meaning something happened to the original one.

It was very subtle, but later installments of Guilty Gear XX (#Reload, Slash, Accent Core, Accent Core Plus) revealed that the Jellyfish Pirate ships were being renovated and upgraded by a crew of female engineers who seem to be part of the ‘Jellyfish network’ of individuals who support the pirates (you have to high jump to see the renovations being made in the stage itself).

In Guilty Gear Isuka, the crew takes a break by the beach.

So, technically speaking, Mayship was upgraded to Mayship II!

Of course, they have their key ship engineer Novel to thank for that… Novel was also responsible for upgrading May’s anchor weapon later on, as the weapon has the label “A work of Novel, 2187” on it… it was likely given to May as a birthday gift.

Was it ever explained where May met Mr. Dolphin and the rest of her aquatic friends?

Nothing official has been stated or information given in her story, only that she calls “Mr. Otter” her ‘sensei’ or 'teacher’… so one could consider the idea that she has learned to speak to them through him.

Mayship II seems to have accommodated 'underwater tanks’ for the Dolphins May works with, as well as her other aquatic friends.

May is confirmed to be Japanese, so it’s possible her ability to communicate with aquatic life is stemmed from that… read the “Ki” tag for more details.For the names of all her friends, read the “May” tag as well.
