Mazda revealed the EX-005 at the 17th Tokyo Motor Show in 1970. The four-seat microcar was intended for inner-city and resort use with passengers sat back-to-back and one driving via a central joystick. Wheels were arranged diagonally. The electric EX-005’s batteries were charged by a single-chamber rotary engine. With the front- and rear-wheels steering, the vehicle could pivot directly on its axis. It was deemed too uncomfortable and difficult to control for everyday use.
