At The Drake Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage The Elephants love a drink of cool water straight from the hose! ************************* This is a #Repost @dswt with @get_repost ・・・ Mbegu can usually be found shepherding around her little charges, but when the hose is out, all bets are off! On particularly hot days, our Keepers spray the babies to cool them down — and Mbegu, who has been in our care for nearly four years, knows the drill well. She’s also discovered that the hose doubles as a personal water fountain and likes to plant herself right in front of its stream! Amazing to see... #trunkupwines @dswt ・・・ Mbegu, Ndotto, and Lasayen only graduated to our Voi Reintegration Unit this morning, but already they’re right at home! Ever-precocious Ndotto didn’t miss a beat, leading the entire herd down to the mud bath and splashing away with delight. The trio even got their first sighting of wild elephants — a peek at the wild lives they themselves will lead when they are ready to fully transition from our care. We’re all feeling full of pride about how far these babies have come over past few years, full of hope for their futures, and full of gratitude to everyone who helps make moments like these possible by supporting our work. Look how warmly welcomed and loved they are from their Elephant family! #trunkupwines @dswt ・・・ Today is no ordinary Monday — it’s a milestone moment for all of us as Mbegu, Lasayen, and Ndotto graduate from our Nairobi Nursery to the Voi Reintegration Unit! These three youngsters, who were rescued as babies (and tiny ones at that — Mbegu was seven weeks old, Lasayen one month old, and Ndotto just two days old at the time of their rescues), now embark on the next step of their journey towards a life back in the protected wilderness of Tsavo East National Park. As they set foot on Voi’s red earth, they received the most wonderful welcome from the 22 orphans who currently live there, and we know that they will be very happy among their extended family. We have successfully raised more than 200 orphaned elephants over the past 40 years, and every single graduation is a major milestone to celebrate. Days like today are monumental; these elephants would not be alive were it not for their rescuers, the DSWT, and those who believe in and support our conservation work. Could they be any more amazing and so deserving of our love & protection? #trunkupwines ・・・ As a seven-week-old, Mbegu survived a stampede, a stoning, and a spearing before she was rescued. Understandably, she was extremely traumatized when she came to the DSWT — and it was the support of the Keepers and the other orphans (like Kauro, photo 1, right) who helped her recover from this trauma. Who rules the world? Matriarchs run the elephant world. As the most senior female member of the family, she has the experience and wisdom to lead them, the emotional capacity to care for and protect them, and the maturity to intervene in any disputes and discipline unruly youngsters. The traits that make a great matriarch manifest early; we're always delighted when some of our Nursery orphans, who are equivalent in life-stage to human toddlers, reveal themselves to be "mini matriarchs."
