Meet Ethan Mazari. He is 23 years old, from Sydney, Australia, and wrote to Juliet because he feels as if he let down the love of his life by not protecting her.
(+) Protective, dedicated, genuine
(-) Stubborn, impulsive, blunt
Even when he was little, Ethan was always the one who just had to protect and care for those around him. When his dad left his mom, even though he was the youngest of three boys, he still was the one who tried his best to take care of her as she tried to pull herself back to her feet. As he progressed through school, Ethan was the one standing up for those who wouldn’t stand up for themselves, regardless of who they were.
When Ethan’s father left the family, there was only one thing he turned to- sports. Football (soccer), in specific. It was all he could do to keep his mind off of things, to keep himself from getting angry not only at his father and his new wife, but at fate and at God, for things ending up the way they did. So he played and played, year after year. By the time came to apply to colleges and universities, Ethan was good enough to recieve a full-ride scholarship to the top university in Australia. He kept getting better and better, until late in his junior year of high school, right when it really mattered, it was all ruined.
It was the middle of a game. Ethan’s team was winning, and he was feeling great. One second he had a clear path to where he needed to be by the goal, the next, there was a body standing in his way, and before he could move out of the way, they collided. It was a freak accident that caused a torn hamstring and a broken leg. Supposedly not that bad, but bad enough to cause the university to revoke Ethan’s scholarship. Heartbroken, he somehow managed to make it through the summer and half of his senior year before meeting someone who’d change things for the better.
While in high school, Ethan was too focused on sports to do much else. That all changed after his injury, because he could no longer play football. It was at an ex-teammate’s party that he met a girl, and her face stayed in his head for days afterwards, until he managed to track her down again. Not long after they started talking, they were dating, and Ethan was head over heels for her. She helped distract him from how upset he was over his lost scholarship, and she filled a hole in his heart he never knew was there. By the time they were twenty-two, he was more than certain that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, and he had just bought an engagement ring when, again, things were changed forever.
He didn’t know the phone number. It was local, but it wasn’t in his contacts, so he let it go to voicemail.
“Hey, Ethan! I’ve got something to share with you, so give me a call back as soon as you can!”
Needless to say, he didn’t call back, and there was another voicemail when he woke up two mornings later.
“Your girlfriend’s a prostitute, Ethan. Just thought you should know!”
Your girlfriend’s a prostitute. Four words no guy ever thinks they’ll hear. Ethan spent two days thinking about it. Thinking about whether to believe whomever had called him or not. Eventually, he decided just to talk to her about it. So he casually brought it up, almost as if it were a joke. But her reaction... Her reaction told him all he needed to know. A day later the engagement ring was sold, her number was blocked, and Ethan was angrier than ever before. But not at her. Not at the anonymous caller. At himself, for failing to protect the love of his life. He should’ve known. He should’ve known that she was hiding something, that there was something wrong, that there was something he could’ve done. He could’ve saved her, and he didn’t, and that was what absolutely killed him.
It was then that Ethan discovered Juliet. Discovered that when no one else would listen, no one else would understand, Juliet would. So he started writing, and soon enough, he recieved his invitation to Verona. After a lot of convincing from his brother, Ethan decided to go, and here he is.
Coming to Verona, Ethan is hoping that he can find something- or maybe even someone -to help him get over his heartbreak. He still loves his ex, but he can’t get over the fact that he broke his promise to himself to protect her.
