Leo starts limping at 8:42 in the morning.

Not dramatically limping — not even real limping — but the kind of limp that looks suspiciously like he remembered that once, three months ago, he stepped on a pebble and Charles gave him a full body massage and half a slice of cheese.

You notice it immediately.

Charles notices it more.

“Mon amour,” he whispers, eyes wide with horror, “he is injured.”

You look down at Leo, who is currently hopping on three legs while wagging his tail and trying to chew on Charles’s shoelace.

“He’s fine,” you say gently.

“He is not fine,” Charles insists, scooping Leo up like a wounded soldier. “Look at him. He is suffering.”

Leo licks Charles’s chin.

You sigh. “Okay. We’ll take him to the vet.”

Charles gasps like you’ve just suggested sending Leo to war. “The vet? But he hates the vet. He will think we betrayed him.”

“He’ll be okay.”

“He will never forgive us.”

Leo sneezes.

Charles clutches him tighter. “See? He is weak.”

You rub Charles’s arm. “Baby, he sneezed.”

“It was a sneeze of pain.”

The Car Ride

You’re driving because Charles is too busy holding Leo like a fragile antique vase.

“He’s shaking,” Charles says, panicked.

“He’s excited.”

“He is terrified.”

Leo is, in fact, trying to climb into Charles’s hoodie.

You reach over and squeeze Charles’s thigh. “He’s safe. You’re holding him. He trusts you.”

Charles softens instantly, kissing Leo’s head. “Papa is here, mon petit. I will protect you.”

Leo burps.

Charles looks at you, horrified. “He is deteriorating.”

You laugh so hard you nearly miss the turn.

At the Vet

The moment you walk into the clinic, Leo becomes a statue. Completely still. Completely silent. Eyes wide.

Charles looks at you like, See? He knows he is dying.

You fill out the form while Charles paces with Leo in his arms.

“What if he needs surgery?” Charles whispers.

“He doesn’t.”

“What if he needs a cast?”

“He doesn’t.”

“What if—”

“Charles,” you say, stepping close, placing your hands on his chest. “He’s okay. Breathe.”

He does. Slowly. Because you asked him to.

Leo, sensing the shift, licks Charles’s chin again.

Charles melts. “He is so brave.”

The Examination

The vet lifts Leo onto the table.

Charles grips your hand like he’s about to witness a tragedy.

Leo stands there, tail wagging, completely normal.

The vet checks his paws, his legs, his joints.

“Well,” she says, smiling, “he’s perfectly healthy.”

Charles blinks. “Healthy?”

“Very. No injury, no pain. Dachshunds sometimes fake limps for attention.”

You turn to Charles slowly.

Charles looks betrayed. “He lied to me.”

Leo barks once, proudly.

The vet laughs. “He’s a smart one.”

Charles places a hand over his heart. “I cannot believe my son manipulated me.”

You squeeze his fingers. “He learned from the best.”

Charles gasps. “Are you saying I am dramatic?”

You raise an eyebrow.

He sighs. “Okay, maybe a little.”

Leo sneezes again.

Charles jumps. “What does that mean?”

“Charles,” you say, pulling him into your side, “it means he’s a dog.”

After the Appointment

You’re walking back to the car, Leo trotting happily on his leash, completely limp‑free.

Charles is still sulking.

“He tricked me,” he mutters.

“He loves you.”

“He used my love against me.”

You wrap your arm around his waist. “You’re a good dad. That’s why he does it.”

Charles stops walking, turning to face you. His expression softens, all the worry melting into something warm and tender.

“You calmed me down,” he says quietly. “I was… very stressed.”

“You were spiraling.”

“I was catastrophizing.”

“You were planning his funeral.”

Charles groans. “Do not remind me.”

You cup his face, thumbs brushing his cheeks. “Hey. You care. That’s what matters.”

He leans into your touch, eyes soft. “I love him. And I love you.”

Leo barks, demanding attention.

Charles sighs. “Yes, mon petit, I love you too.”

You laugh, tugging Charles closer by his hoodie. “Come here.”

He kisses you — slow, grateful, lingering — the kind of kiss that says thank you for grounding me, thank you for loving me, thank you for loving him too.
