Star Trek ‘The Wrath of Khan’, Mondo 2016.
It’s Christmas & in my house Star Trek is something that’s very special. From my childhood, now to my children. It’s as nostalgic & vivid as ever now because my grandparents are no longer with us & my brother & I would watch in awe with them but now it has been passed on to to our children.
After the perfect score from Jerry Goldsmith for Star Trek ‘The Motion Picture’ 1979 & a unforgettable theme that would be used in Star Trek ‘The Next Generation’ 1987 & Star Trek V ‘The Final Frontier’ 1989, it was a tall order but James Horner took to the task with ease it seems. The film takes a more military theme compared to the exploration & the unknown of the first & this is heard in the soundtrack as well. James’s musical composition in areas would become apparent Star Trek lll ‘The Search for Spock’ 1984 & ‘Aliens’ 1986.
The film plays out as ‘submarine warfare’ mostly in the ‘Multara Nebula’ you can hear nautical stylisations in places thought out. What engrossed me as a child was the ‘Khans or the Reliant’s’ maniacal theme, it would interchange with ‘Kirk or the Enterprise’ when dialogue, acting or model work from the ships was required. Basically it was good guy good theme straight into villain & back again. it was all deliberate & was the first time this style had been done.
The main theme says it all, if it takes you then the rest will..... but I’m sure this is a sci fi film you would have seen before. The soundtrack seriously matches the films heart, both can be beautiful & violent. I have the original but this is the extended version & the effect of the ‘Maltara Nebula’ record is quite something, the gatefold shows Khan marooned on Ceti Alpha V, the inside shows a spectacular battle between the Enterprise & the Reliant in comic form.
If you love the film like I do it’s well worth it, Mondo have surpassed themselves & I’m happy to say this magnificent Sci Fi adventure deserved a glorious rework for the 50th anniversary of the greatest franchise television or film has ever seen.

AU where the 'five year mission' in Star Trek is just Kirk renaming his banishment because he made 'too much shit in town'. And his crue are just his friends who followed him because they're too loyal.
Star Trek - Who was like me the first time ?
When I first read Star Trek fanfiction I had trouble to understand why:
- Kirk had blue eyes
- Why Chekov had half the age of Mc Coy
- And... WHY SPOCK AND UHURA WERE DATING????
Sincerly,
A TOS fan.
