Ellipses Slam Poetry
This Saturday, April 7th, Ellipses, Princeton’s first slam poetry team, will be having their show, Synthesis, at Richardson Auditorium. During their rehearsal week, MC Otani spoke to two of their members, Jasmine and Somi. They talk about their writing process and their performance styles, and then we got an exclusive preview of the poems they’ll be performing at the show.

If you’ve ever been to any New Jersey train stations, you’ll see a bunch of posters for 1800 crisis hotline numbers, people you can call if you need someone to talk to. Every night, there’s one tiny phone room in Princeton’s campus, where some of those people shut themselves in to do just that -- to listen. Here’s CONTACT.
Princeton is a relatively open campus. Pretty much anyone can walk in and out and enjoy its lawns, gardens, events, and if left unsupervised, even classrooms. There’s so much free space and so little supervision, that over time, students and townies have taken over and transformed them into their own little worlds. The Friend Center, where I take an engineering lecture, is one of those worlds. During the day, it is used for classes, but at night, it is the headquarters of the Jersey Japes, a group of competitive Super Smash Bros gamers.
A few weeks ago, Larry Krasner was elected as district attorney for the city of Philadelphia. One of his main proposals is centered around bail reform, and since his election more people have been talking about the ways the system should change. This week, News and Culture spoke to Ted Callon, co-founder of the Philadelphia Bail Fund, about the bail system in the US and the ways in which people have been organizing to advocate for change.
A few minutes before our weekly show on February 16th, we decided to not air this piece. FCC regulations prohibit any content mentioning "lower body excretions," and we decided to err on the side of caution. What disappoints us the most is that what this panel discussed was the very danger of silence, and how censorship on this topic has historically dismissed women's health issues. We hope that you enjoy this piece, and that sometime in the future, this topic might be discussed openly with less fear and less prejudice.
