Foggy by Zany Danger
This post was a prompt from @ellaenchanting for her story this month! She gave me the word "Finicky." Thank you! I admit I took a backwards path to this, but it being close to halloween this story fits.

At five o’clock on a cool October morning, Mabel woke up under a spell. She felt as if the fog she could see in the harbor near her house, had somehow drifted into her head. Mabel thought as she put her coat on and stepped outside, “what a dense fog, so thick.”
Moments later, she found herself in a place that she didn’t recognize as her neighborhood. She turned around to face where she came from, her house wasn’t there. In its place was a darkly painted house. It reminded her of a story she wrote recently. Just like in her story, there was a lantern on the porch with an amber flame burning inside it. Confused, Mabel walked up the steps to examine the lantern.
Mabel spoke to herself. “Am I in a dream? Is this real?”
A smooth calming voice coming from behind said, “This is more real than your everyday, dear.”
Mabel was taken off guard by this voice. She was standing on a strangers porch fiddling with a lantern. She turned to face a woman that also seemed to have stepped right out of her story. Long dark hair, steely blue eyes, and draped in emerald velvet. Perplexed, she quickly apologized and moved down to the flagstone path leading up to the house.
“Now, now. You have nothing to apologize for. You seem lost, would you like to come inside?”
Mabel felt drawn in as if there was something moving her inside the house. “I obey,” Mabel thought. It felt almost as if there was a wall of velvet moving her inside. She loved the feeling of being compelled. “Yes, thank you. I’m Mabel.”
“We know who you are. We’ve been waiting. You remember me, yes?”
“I…I think I do. Are you Jane?”
“Yes, That’s me. You are most welcome Mabel.”
“How..? I?”
“You intuited our existence, our coven here. Even though in your mind we were part of a story, some part of you knows we exist. We called you here earlier this evening. A certain spell we are working on is become a little finicky and we thought you could be helpful, as your gifts have recently started showing themselves.”
“I…”
“Please sit. I know you are confused.” Jane moved her fingertips to Mabel’s temples. “You will find that emotion simply fading away now, and replaced with understanding. Good.”
Mabel tried to speak, but became blissfully distracted by Jane’s touch, and voice. Her eyes un-focusing and focusing, drunk on this feeling. Little moans of contentment came from her every so often.
Jane said, “Repeat after me, as this is part of our coven’s annual ritual.”
“Yes, Jane.”
“Tonight we become one, through our struggles and our plight.”
“Tonight we become one, through our struggles and our plight.”
“Through the darkness we shall thrive, hear our call creature of night!”
“Through the darkness we shall thrive, hear our call creature of night!”
Jane was satisfied with how pliable Mabel had become, both in body and mind. She, standing behind Mabel, moved her hands to her shoulders and then caressed her neck and chest.
Jane spoke something into Mabel’s ear that she didn’t understand but repeated anyway. Everything went dark as she said the last syllable.
Mabel woke to the fall sun filtering through her bedroom window. On the bedside table was a note that read, “looking forward to next we meet. Jane.” Mabel sighed.
