Geeking out over MCAT Practice Test Analysis
Let’s share some tips on review and analysis of MCAT practice tests!
Hits & Misses
What types of questions are you getting wrong?
knowledge
problem solving
research reasoning
data-based reasoning
Why are you getting questions wrong?
ran out of time
didn’t understand what was being asked
didn’t have the appropriate knowledge
didn’t properly apply appropriate knowledge to answer choices
made a simple mistake, not focused
What was your confidence in your answer choice?
confident + correct = good!
somewhat confident + correct = okay
not confident + correct = need to boost your confidence
confident + incorrect = yikes! address this issue!
somewhat confident + incorrect = low hanging fruit!
not confident + incorrect = needs work
Testing Conditions
how much sleep have you had recently?
how awake or fatigued did you feel?
how much caffeine did you have?
what did you have to eat?
where did you take it?
what time of day did you take it?
what kind of breaks did you take?
Studying Up
Review your practice test question-by-question to come up with a list of issues you need to address: pacing, focus, a troublesome question type, content weakness, question comprehension, test taking technique, et cetera.
Then map these onto a study schedule, hopefully addressing a number of these issues before your next practice test.
Practice Test Goals
Set goals or intention for each practice test experience such as:
answer every question
finish on time
practice pacing
practice focusing
simulate test day conditions
