Nicholas was inspecting a squash at the farmer’s market when he felt a prickling on the back of his neck. Though it was a faint sensation, and he had no real reason to believe it meant anything, Nicholas immediately felt uneasy. Still, he tried not to act rashly or let on how uncomfortable he was. Instead, he finished inspecting the squash, paid for his produce, bid the stall owner a friendly farewell, and then headed off in the direction of his favorite used bookstore. The tail he seemed to have acquired―a man in a sharp gray suit―was hot on his heels.
