MC Monday Prompt 1:
Mammon stole something from MC to get some money for the witches. How does MC react?
Kai sighed as he turned down the hall leading to Mammon's room. His feet dragged slowly, as though he weren't already exhausted tonight. Kai scowled faintly, Solomon's drunken laughter still echoing in his ears. Of course he had known the sorcerer's pact with Asmodeus was shady in origin, but the exact details had turned his stomach - it just ended up a bit too familiar.
Unconsciously counting his steps, Kai came to a halt in front of Greed's door. "Some things never change," he thought to himself as he knocked - sharply, mimicking Lucifer's pattern. Kai waited a moment as all sounds of motion from the far side of the door went from frenzy to still. A few breaths passed, and Kai allowed a sadistic smirk to flicker across his face, before he repeated the knock, pulling out his DDD to send a quick message, "Hey, let me in!"
The chime on the far side of the door was met with a muffled curse and the sound of several locks being unlatched, before the slightest sliver of Mammon's face appeared in the crack. Kai allowed himself to be pulled in, the door closing so quickly it knocked against his hip. Hiding a slight wince, he leaned against the wall, crossing his arms across his narrow chest.
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU KNOCKIN' LIKE THAT!?", the Avatar of Greed yelped, reaching past the human to throw the lock. "Tryin' to give the Great Mammon a heart attack."
Kai shrugged, casting his gaze around Mammon's room with affected nonchalance. "Maybe I just wanted to visit? See how the other half lives?"
The golden sun on sea blue eyes narrowed, a suspicious squint twisting the demon's features for a moment. "Well, yeah of course ya did human! You should be happy I entertain your whims! Not everybody gets unlimited access!", he flashed a wide grin as he put on his most charming face, the one Kai knew well meant the demon knew he was caught. "So, uh...wha'd ya want?"
The human chuckled, rolling his eyes as he patted Mammon's cheek lightly, turning to stroll deeper into the room as the other man spluttered in surprise, deep golden brown skin burnishing as his face warmed.
Kai wandered in, looking around at all the familiar items, all newer, cleaner than he was used to seeing them. His gaze caught on the pile of assorted, random goods on the coffee table between back leather couches, and he unceremoniously plopped down, making himself comfortable. "I was hoping you'd help me find something...", he paused. "I've heard you're the best at finding missing items..."
Still blushing, Mammon's chest puffed out at the words, and he nodded, vaulting over the back of the couch to settle next to the human. "What's my Attendant need? Can't have y'all moping cause yer pining for something. You'd just be too distracted to serve m- us properly!"
Kai raised his eyebrows with a quiet laugh, leaning forward and feigned playing idly with the items scattered across the tabletop. Grimm, a few pieces of jewelry, an extremely expensive nib that Kai recognized as coming from a favourite quill, an ancient leather bound book with pages thick and uneven, several silver teaspoons bearing the script of the Royal D on the handles. Kai picked up one of the spoons, hearing the sharp inhale next to him. "Barbatos probably already knows these are gone, you know?", he chanced a glance back over his shoulder, spinning the flatware between his fingers. The spoon clattered loudly against the table as it fell from his grip. Kai frowned at his unsteady hands. "So, business or pleasure?"
Mammon went near-purple, squeaking out a strangled "Huh?"
Kai leaned back, nearly snuggling up against the flustered demon. "Witches or winnings?", he murmured, sparing the small pile of pricy items another glance.
Mammon froze. "Witches? What're you, crazy?! The Great Mammon don't know anything 'bout witches!"
Kai silently berated himself, realizing once again, this wasn't his Mammon. This one had never spoken of debts to witches or anything which even alluded to them. The silence stretched out, becoming awkward.
"Mammon?"
"Yeah, Attendant?", his tone had become guarded.
"Have you seen my flask?"
"W-what? You had a flask? I didn't know that!", a booted foot knocked a short pile of magazines askew, obscuring the item laying behind.
Kai looked into Mammon's gaze, unnatural gold meeting sun-dappled sea.
"Are you sure? It was in my jacket earlier, I know I had it with me..."
"Pft. Humans have bad memories! I bet yer half-senile already!", the demon grinned. "Ya prob'ly just left it at Cocytus Hall! Didja ask Solomon, or just come accuse me?"
Kai shook his head, scowl reappearing at the mention of his mentor. "I had it here earlier, in this pocket...", Kai pulled open his jacket to indicate an inner pocket, revealing a shirt beneath which was more holes held together with strips of fabric than an actual garment. "I noticed it was missing after we cleared the table at lunch. I just thought maybe you'd seen it." The human moved to get to his feet, drawing a deep sigh as he dropped his eyes, disappointment etched into his features. "If you do see it, could you get it back to me? It was a gift from...," he paused, shrugging a bit. "Doesn't matter, they're gone now.", standing with a stretch, he turned on his heel to head back towards the door. "I'll let myself out."
He counted his steps silently, fingers nearly brushing the lock as he felt a comforting weight slip into his pocket.
The mumble was barely audible. "Musta dropped it earlier & I picked it up. F'rgot."
Biting his lip to hide a smirk, Kai turned, offering a broad smile to the demon, rising onto his toes to place a quick kiss close to the corner of Mammon's lips, just far enough to be deniable as cheek. "Thanks, Mammon. I knew I could count on you. See you tomorrow?"
The Avatar of Greed mumbled an affirmation, his fingers lightly brushing where Kai's lips had touched.
Kai stepped back into the hallway, stifling a soft laugh after he was a few paces away. Taking out the flask, he shook his head, grinning.
It had been refilled.
