His grip is too firm. He holds on to me, but I am merely water sliding over stone and no matter how hard he tries to keep me, I will soon be gone. At least I feel this fleeting. Like glass blown to its thinnest point. Beautiful and shining and solid. Delicate. Shatterable.

I float in nothing. The tether binding my incorporeal form keeps me from floating into the abyss that is as black as pitch and arctic. The restraint is also fragile. One wrong move and I will have nothing to hold me. Wake up, Emma. It is only a dream. Not a dream, though. My worst nightmare. The abyss I float in threatens death.

He motions for me to sit in my usual chair across from him. I do not want to. He will ask me how I am, and I will be forced into telling him more lies. I am tired of the lies. I stand before the chair, and his smile is gentle, his gray eyes studying. He searches for the woman he tried to erase, but he will not find Her. I am too careful.
