John Freeman - Canyon: The Music of John Freeman

NOTES:

John Freeman was a Denton staple for much of the 90's fronting at least a dozen different bands with different styles. His two main acts were as the front man of the Doom's U.K. and his electric solo sets as the Dutch Treats. CANYON is a compilation of various groups, many of which I didn't have the pleasure of seeing live, so I asked my older brother Dirk for his memories.

MEAT HELMETS:  A couple of Meat Helmets shows they stuck raw hamburger onto these motorcycle helmets they were wearing and a guy was chopping up animal heads with a butcher knife and throwing the meat into the audience.  Some of their other shows didn't involve raw meat.  I think a lot of the clubs and patrons didn't like it. 

DOOMS U.K.: The Dooms were really tight and always on.  Every show was a kind of arena-rock perversion happening in a tiny club.  Lots of entertaining banter in-between songs mostly about what the next song is about.  There's always an endearing provocation happening onstage and it's always hilarious. 

TELETHON:  Telethon was originally just John a couple of small casios.  Freaky minimal German fetish music played on cheap keyboards. The on-stage banter became heavily German.    After a few years he got some other guys to play in the band and it became a more fully realized synth-punk show. 

THE PSYCHOS: I know as much about The Psychos as you probably do.  John's serial-killer themed punk rock duo after he moved to NY.  I never got to see them. **

BLACK EYE BUSTED LIP: I had never even heard of Black Eye Busted Lip before this CD came out.**

THE DUTCH TREATS: I've seen Dutch Treats probably 100 times.  Very few can successfully pull off the one man rock extravaganza as well as Uncle Sloppy.  He played the same songs almost every set for years, ending with Prince's "When Dove's Cry" possibly 100% of the time.  I saw him vomit during a song and continue playing.   The look on people's faces when they see him play for the first time:  amazing disbelief as they look around the room making sure everyone else is seeing the twitching showman blasting out pop songs from a tiny amp about dwarf porn and Mediterranean house-boys.  Truly never gets old.  

John moved away a few years ago but will be back in Dallas this week opening for Negativeland at the Texas Theater.
