Looking for my company, MediaSmith, to start promoting sports.
I know dozens of videographers and photographers who kill to get into the NBA and the NFL.
But, that’s not where I want to start nor is it somewhere I really want to be. Honestly, if the opportunity for working in the NBA or the NFL comes across me, I will look to have a team member cover those events.
However, I want to promote the sports that mean a lot to me:
Motorsports
Soccer
The main thing I want to mention about those two is that they are HUGE internationally, but Americans don’t really seem to care about it. So, my selling point to get media badges is to tell them that any and all photos are their own and I will promote the content via my own website.
My starting point is on Formula 1 and Formula E. The thing about Formula 1 is that it’s huge everywhere and it’s unknown in the United States (whereas soccer is huge everywhere and isn’t appreciated in the United States).
Additionally, Formula E is at this point where it’s just starting off, regular racing fans are giving it hate because “it isn’t real racing”, and it just doesn’t have the edge that could attract a regular audience.
But, it’s my belief that Formula E is the next Formula 1 in terms of popularity for the rich. Now, don’t get me wrong, Formula 1 will always be a sport for rich people, but Formula E is the next motorsport that will be a sport for rich people. Formula 1 is already promoting astounding things like ERS, DRS, and KERS. Formula E seeks to do the same with their battery powered cars.
With all this said, I have an opportunity to see, photograph, and capture video of the Formula E drivers, cars, and brands at Long Beach, CA. I look forward to getting some crazy shots and hopefully expanding the brand of “FIA Formula E” to the United States.
Additionally, I hope this partnership opens up more doors for me in terms of doing stuff that involves the FIA. Again, I’d love to do stuff related to F1, but I’d also like to travel to Bathurst and get some killer photos of the V8 endurance race and maybe some WRC as well.
