ISO 13485 is a standard for Quality Management Systems for Medical Devices. The principles are also applicable for Translation Services but are often certified via ISO 9001 and ISO 17100.
Medical Translators should not only be native in the target language, but should have some other qualifying attributes:
- A-language skills in Target language
- Proficient in Source and Target language
- An explicit Professional Degree in Translation
- Academic Background in Source and Target Language
- Full-time Experience in Medical Translation or related field
- Sound Knowledge of Medical Terminology, Procedures, Rules, and Regulations
- Must have the same specialization in the branch of medicine for which he/she is performing the translation.
