You know what, this is driving me a bit crazy, this trade language which is everywhere and how LITTLE we know about this

The first picture is from Horizon so that I can show a clear image, but you can see it being used on Tuchanka, Sur'Kesh, etc and in different games as well, right? So it is everywhere from ME1 to ME3

And it bothers me a bit that some planets (ahem, Tuchanka!!!) won't show us a different language but then again, perhaps it's entirely linked to translators.

But the second image on the left: what we see on the Collector ship which I think might show either pure Collector language, or Prothean, or a hybrid version?

and the third image on the right: it's hard to tell at first, I thought it was like a mix of Collector and trade language, now I think it's just the translator of the data found in the first image as EDI is data-mining and a lot of information appears on screen:

I think the average monolingual person tends to underestimate the amount of brain work and physical energy that goes into being a bilingual translator.

I believe making Dr. Al-Hashimi's dictation app solely an AI solution is a disservice to the current state of speech-to-text. It's more than just people who dictate notes. This is harming people who rely on speech-to-text to live, and it's not just an app. It's another sub-industry that has been gutted by generative AI. There are people who rely on speech-to-text and literally have no ability to type for a long list of reasons that have nothing to do with laziness or using it as a shortcut. It's their lifeline to the outside world and actually incredibly beneficial, and panning it off as just a generative AI thing, rather than something that's been around for decades, is really bothering me. Also, there were, and maybe still are, people who do nothing but transcribe medical dictation for their job/career, just like the translators for ASL and non-English-speaking patients. Like, the dismissiveness most of the characters have for both is true to life, but please, please, please have someone call them out on that because it could be a good opportunity for character development, and automatic transcription is not a bad thing. This has been a deeply flawed tool for a while. Generative AI has made it exponentially worse, and it should never have been forced into it, especially in critical environments like an ED or even ORs, because there are legit surgical devices that operate solely on voice command.

Opening the Pandora’s Box of Latin American Women’s Writing

THOUGH AURORA VENTURINI wrote more than 40 books and was awarded the two top literary prizes in her native Argentina, the first English translation of her fiction, Cousins, was published only in 2023, almost a decade after her death. We, the Casertas is her second novel to appear in English, this month via Soft Skull Press. Both were translated by Kit Maude, the Buenos Aires–based literary translator who has also translated works by Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortázar.

In addition to her many published novels, Venturini’s literary executor Liliana Viola estimates that she left behind more than 60 unpublished manuscripts, all written on a typewriter. Despite this volume of work, the author was not widely recognized during her lifetime. In 1948, she won the Premio Iniciación for her first book of poetry, El Solitario. Fifty years later, Cousins, published as Las Primas in Argentina in 2007, was awarded the prestigious Página/12 New Novel Prize—established to honor new writers!

In an online conversation with me, translator Maude explained his admiration of Venturini’s work and noted that “her reputation rose and fell but for most of the time was pretty much nonexistent until she won the award for Cousins, and even after that, the acclaim subsided fairly quickly.” It is only now, with a recent set of reissues and some first-time publications coming out from Spanish publisher Tusquets Editores, that her work is being more widely appreciated. “The tragedy is that she isn’t around to see it,” Maude adds.

Perhaps the most difficult job in the world is translating Trump. Even native speakers of English can have difficulty trying to figure out what he is saying. So consider how difficult it is to convey Trump's thoughts (whatever they are) into Chinese, Russian, KiSwahili, Spanish, or Hindi.

Putin is somewhat fluent in English – though that probably doesn't help him much when it comes to deciphering Trump.

In the HIGHLY unlikely event that Trump won the Nobel Peace Prize, he would have to give a Nobel lecture. Imagine him speaking as coherently as Maria Ressa did in hers in 2021.
