Well sure it's important to learn about other cultures, but its even more important that you aren't getting your information from a source as skewed as one from the western media. That article you posted was from the economist, for fucks sake they do not give a rats ass about women let alone in other countries. Also, "gendercide" is not the effect of a government policy because other media 'sources' have shown it occurs in India which has no 'one child' rule. I really wish you'd take a step back and realize that I'm not actually arguing against you. I have no interest in telling you that you're wrong - just that I wish that you wouldn't TELL me my beliefs based off of a one sentence answer to an anonymous post.

I completely recognize that gendercide happens in other parts of the world. I also try and understand how the different political/cultural climates of different areas affect how gendercide manifests. I posted that article from the economist because its an article i read in class that I knew talked about the issue and it was in my email inbox and I had easy access to it. Its a long article that talks about the context surrounding gendercide in several countries all over the world. I'm completely down with discussing the additional issues IN the article, the ways in which the article is problematic. I just usually refrain from going in depth about issues unless i'm asked . I admit, its problematic to only share x about an issue if i'm capable to explaining x, y & z. 

I'm familiar with jaded16india and again, I have no problem with the things she says and the points in that particular post. My parents are from Nigeria - I completely understand the issues with western feminism, western media and how we like to portray other cultures as barbaric/incorrect.

But hey, I completely accept the fact that I shouldn't assume that those who read my blog will probably think that I completely endorse every link I post unless I state otherwise. And Im not going to act like this isn't showing me that I should probably make sure my future posts actually clarify what I believe and how I feel about certain issues. All I like doing is posting general information and encouraging discussion.

on the topic of ''gendercide'', why do western feminists feel so compelled to comment on and criticize cultures that aren't their own? (That doesn't mirror imperialism at all!!!)um I like the stuff you post and I'd prefer if you weren't one of them. I'm also tired of people pretending preference for male children doesn't exist in the west.

I'm not understanding the issue. You take issue with critiquing gendercide? 

Gendercide isn't a cultural tradition, its the effect of failed government policy. Critiquing gendercide isn't a critique on a culture - its not about saying "look at these bad people and the bad things their culture tells them to do." Its looking at what happens when top-down government intervention restricts families into doing certain things for survival - and that government ignoring the consequences.

I agree that we shouldn't critique cultures - but I wholly disagree that we should ignore the things that go on in other parts of the world... there's a huge different between learning about issues that people outside the bubble of America face and condescendingly passing judgement on a culture they don't understand.

But seriously, I'm not understanding the issue here...

in addition, if you're speaking on the tone of the last question "is it true in china that doctors kill baby girls" then yeah, obviously we shouldn't perpetuate flawed thinking about all people in other countries - which is why i posted the link to the economist. I don't condone rhetoric that believes "all x people do y" but that doesn't mean i'm going to NOT educate myself and others about what goes on in the world around us.

Also, I understand the fact that preference for male children may exist in the west. The one thing i dislike about tumblr is that it encourages us to read a comment, single post - and draw extra conclusions based on what we read - instead of encouraging discussion or taking the extra efforts to clarify what people actually mean.

I personally feel like gendercide in certain areas only highlight the worldwide issue of gender inequity all over the world. But these issues aren't evident until we see certain areas driven to extremes to live up to these preferences through (as i stated earlier) failed government top-down policies that put way to much control over their citizens lives. In the west we do the same thing, except its less talked about because its done preemptively through in-vitro fertilization as parents try to make perfect babies in petri dishes. But because this is happens with well-to-do families, we discuss it a lot less and its rarely ever an issue. I'm not a fan of the fact that we tend to ignore the issues that go on in America, and I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things. But if i'm asked about a particular issue in a particular place, my answer is probably going to focus on that particular question.
