The Birth of Vladimir the Bold, Prince of Serpukhov

On July 15, 1353, Vladimir Andreyevich, later known as Vladimir the Bold, was born into the ruling family of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The son of Prince Andrey of Serpukhov and grandson of Ivan I of Moscow, Vladimir became one of the most important military leaders of medieval Russia during a period of conflict with the Mongol Golden Horde and struggles among Russian princes.

Vladimir ruled the principality of Serpukhov and became a close ally of his cousin, Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy of Moscow. He gained a reputation as a skilled warrior and commander, playing a major role in defending Russian lands against external threats and strengthening Moscow’s influence among the Russian principalities.

His greatest moment came during the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, where Vladimir commanded a crucial reserve force that helped secure a historic victory over the forces of Mamai of the Golden Horde. The victory became a symbol of growing Russian unity and resistance against Mongol domination.

Known for his courage, leadership, and military ability, Vladimir the Bold remains remembered as one of the key figures in the rise of medieval Moscow and the early formation of a united Russian state.

Death of Dmitry of Suzdal (July 5, 1383)

On July 5, 1383, Dmitry of Suzdal, a Russian prince of the Rurikid dynasty, died, marking the end of a turbulent career shaped by the fragmented politics of northeastern Rus’. As Prince of Suzdal and later Grand Prince of Vladimir, Dmitry was closely involved in the constant power struggles among the Russian principalities during the period of Mongol-Tatar dominance under the Golden Horde.

His reign was defined by shifting alliances, particularly with his brother Dmitry Donskoy of Moscow, as rival cities competed for supremacy and the coveted title of Grand Prince. Though Suzdal itself never rose to dominate the region, Dmitry’s actions reflected the broader struggle that eventually allowed Moscow to emerge as the leading center of Russian power. His death helped clear the way for further consolidation under the rising Muscovite state.

Jesus Embroidery found in Russia🪡🧵

Found in a Medieval Russian burial ground, this embroidery fragment depicts the Deesis, a traditional iconic Byzantine and later Eastern Orthodox representation of Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator.

The Deesis layout has Christ in the center of St John the Baptist to Christ's left and the Virgin Mary to his right. Christ is usually enthroned, holding a book in his left hand and raising the right hand in gesture of blessing. You can sort of make it out here. A praying St John can also be deduces but the other figure likely Mary, on the other side, has been lost. Archeologists believe this fabric was part of a headdress from sometime between the 13th and 15th century.

As someone who dabbles in various mediums of art - painting, illustration, leather work and even embroidery, I find it particularly fascinating to hear about and see even the smallest pieces of surviving textiles from the medieval period let alone even older eras.
