We were charged with despatches for the fleet then off Cadiz, and on the tenth day we fell in with it, remained a week in company, and then were ordered to Gibraltar and Malta. From Malta we went home again with despatches, having been out three months.

He is remembered for a naval catastrophe, of which he was author. He commanded an impossible manoeuvre which resulted in the collision of two battleships (HMS Camperdown and his own ship, HMS Victoria - Victoria sank with great loss of life. He refused to be taken off and went down with the her).
