Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a class of “smart” materials that can remember their shape and transition easily between shapes in response to a stimulus or “trigger”. These can be programmed into different temporary shapes and then return to their original “memorized” shape by certain triggers such as heat, fluid uptake, or mechanical force. The advantages of SMPs in orthopedic implants include increased deformability, a hassle-free insertion approach and reduced force requirements to deploy.
