Rowan Smith and What I Learnt

Rowan Smith’s art resonates with me in a particular way. I find it engaging, pretty and understandable, it’s also relatable in more than one way for me. His early work was humorous and fun and quite poetic too. It played with connections and made you think about these connections in a different way. Now he is making work that some say is more mature (I think that Rowan says the same), it’s more political and critical on the connections of every day life, like, privilege as apposed to technology, like some of his earlier work. 

I'm new too the art world, very new, and we have been asked to start thinking about the kind of art that we want to make. I hinted at art that represents MY space and MY voice in the world I live in.. what that voice says, I don't know yet. But, I have thought a lot about speaking about things like politics, privilege and community. As a white straight male, I find myself very interested in Rowans work who is also a white straight male (I think). Im watching him to see how he goes about speaking his mind and I feel that I can learn a lot from him. I can learn about art language, finding my own and by what means that language is spoken. Whether it is spoken through sculpture, printing making, painting or video I don't know, but Rowans processes definitely do interest me. 

Im not trying to become a mini Rowan but I do enjoy his work and i would never take the language of another artists because at the end of the day I am a very different person with very different experiences to shared.

‪#‎MeetingArtists‬: Rodney Fuentebella (Concept Artist for Marvel Studios)

This year seems to be about meeting talented Pinoy artists :) Last month it was Ron Del Carmen of Pixar. Yesterday, it was Rodney Fuentebella of Marvel Studios.

The introduction, given by his very own sister, shared how even at a young age Rodney had shown a preference for the arts. After the family moved to the States, Rodney had continued to keep himself entertained with drawing.

At the beginning of his career, his earlier works were very inspired by animation as well as old video games. There were times the projects he worked on at his first few jobs never got released. He also shared how sometimes you don't really get to do what you want at first in work --- Revealing he had once had to design a zipper.

All his hardwork paid off though because obviously he had graduated from zipper designs to designing Ironman suits!

From his talk one can grasp how designing is actually a kind of problem solving. What he does as a concept artist is to illustrate someone else's ideas and gives it life. From visualizing how Capt. America would fall from a window to how the Iron Man's suit would attach itself to Tony Stark, he works with his colleagues to present strong ideas that would hopefully be understood on screen.

Passion, observation, education and constant practice is the bread and butter behind his designs.One other skill he shared which I think people may forget is the importance of being friendly. Connection and working well with others is as important as the technical skills needed.

All in all, Rodney's casual and enthusiastic presentation rubbed off well with the audience. It helped that he was as big as a fanboy about what he did as his audience was.

Hoping to get to see more from him soon! We will get to see some of his new work in MARVEL'S Avengers: Age of Ultron. I, for one, am friggin' excited to see it.
