...what you really get as an audience member listening to [Bach's] music is how much he believes in Jesus. And I think that's why that music works, you know, that's why it's passionate. It's not because the point of it is to convince *us* that Jesus is great. The whole point of the B minor Mass or the St. Matthew Passion is to show us how powerfully committed *he* is and how important that belief is to him. So, when you get to that level of listening, it doesn't matter what he believes in, what matters is that you are in the presence of someone who has found a reason to live. And if that person can find a reason to live, then I can find a reason to live, even if it's a completely different reason.
