The Others Series by Anne Bishop - Fancasting

I'm re-reading the series which is probably one of my most re-read book series (right next to anything by Tamora Pierce) so here's my fancasting for most of the main characters (in the first book at least).

If there’s one book series out there i want made into a TV show is ‘The Other’ series by Anne Bishop.

Summary of Written in Red (Book 1)

Fyi, This is not a romance

As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

The characters are very unique. i don’t know if anyone has written these kinds of characters before. and if you know any books like this please tell me.

These Others are Shape-Shifters. They are animals like wolfs, foxes, bears,panthers, crows, owls but the difference is they are sentient, and very intelligent. They can shape shift into human form and use human technology, speak human language, use human money to buy stuff, but at the same time still retain the wildness and animal side of them. Among the Others which are animals there are also The Elementals, The Sanguinati and the mysterious Elders. The Elementals are always in Human form and control the elements of fire, wind, water, etc. The Sanguinati also are in human form and they are like vampires except they don’t suck your blood by biting your neck. Nah, they absorbed that from your skin. Also, they can turn into smoke. The Elders are the most powerful and do not interact with humans at all. They live in the forest and no human who lays eyes on them lives.

The characters i love so much are The Others. They co-exist with humans but that doesn’t mean they see humans as buddies. Some, of the Others live in towns which they control and allow humans to live and work there. But then there are the others who live in the untamed forests and they will eat humans if they come across them (That doesn’t mean the Others in towns won’t eat humans. I mean if you enter an exclusive only Others area without permission prepare to be eaten). 

The world building here is on point! And its monsters are exactly that ‘Monsters’. They are not your cliche werewolf or vampires. They are so much more than that. And each and every character is written very well. 

Its a world where nature is in control and man can’t do whatever he wants. He wants to dig a coal mine? He’ll have to ask for permission from the Others. And if they find the mine is polluting the land they’ll shut it down. The humans can stay mad about it.

I just discovered Anne Bishop's books, the Meg Corbyn series. I read "Written in Red" in one day ! So little fandom in here so I thought I had to post this!

Has anyone else read The Others series by Anne Bishop? I’m on the last book, and I had read a review before starting it that complained about the book being sexist with it’s gender roles. At the time, I registered the review but did not think much of it because other reviews talked about other points of the book.

Now that I’m reading it, I feel like I need to agree? It’s not so much that the post-apocalyptic situation makes everyone go back to very primitive hunter/gatherer roles but more that those roles are exclusively divided according to gender with a lot of throw away lines about “men do this” or “women are this” with no further thought.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed anything???
