The New Roommate
Orientation day, move in day, it was the same thing. It was the first day of the rest of her college career, and Mulan was nervous. She had gotten into this school on a full ride scholarship, and she knew how much was dependent on her. She didn't want to think about it, but she knew that there was no way she could allow herself to slack off, or her grades to fall below anything lower than an A. Even a B wouldn't be enough for her, and she had to be hard on herself no matter what it took. For her father.
She had everything that she needed to bring with her in two duffel bags. She didn't waste time bringing anything that wasn't going to be of use to her, even if it meant leaving some of her possessions at home with her family. She did however bring her favorite comb, the one her father gave to her when she turned sixteen. She would wear it on special occasions, ensuring that it wouldn't get damaged or stolen while she was away. She kept it in a special container that would stay next to her bed and whenever she thought about going home, she would look at it and remember why she was thousands of miles away from home. It would be that comb that would keep her going, that would motivate her to excel in school.
Her mind wandered for a moment as she looked at her surroundings. This university was so much bigger than her high school - as she assumed it would be. But seeing it in pictures and being there in person were two completely different things. It would be so easy to get lost in between classes, the buildings looking exactly alike. She looked around again, realizing that she had no idea where her dorm was or how to get there. If only she had a map of the school. If only there was someone kind enough to show her the way.
Oh well. She would get there eventually, even if it meant asking for directions.
