Mega Garchomp Z looks so cool! I actually like it better than Mega Garchomp!
Art dump
Oh here's Mega Garchomp Z's official art!
Could you review Mega Garchomp Z?
I think out of all the Pokemon with two megas, Mega Garchomp Z has the least reason to exist. I'm not overly fond of doubling up on Pokemon that already had megas, but at least with the others there's some duality thing going on:
Mewtwo has a psychic-based more Mew-like form and a more humanoid fighting-type form to reference its spliced DNA;
Charizard has one different-looking form that leans into and justifies its original typing, and one similar-looking form that finally gives it dragon typing;
Raichu has one form that's Pikachu and another that's...well still Pikachu, but less so;
Absol is the strongest conceptually, having one form for yin and one for yang;
And Lucario has one form that's more aggressive and leans into its more fighting-based badass nature, and one form that's more defensive and leans into its elegant nature
But with Garchomp, I don't get what they were going for. It's pure dragon-type now, but there's nothing design-wise that ties into that. If anything, it seems like it should've swapped ground for flying, as the most emphasis seems to be on the idea of flight, with it constantly hovering and it having a tiny bit more of a jet motif with the striping and larger hand-wings—but even that's not emphasized very much. So instead of feeling like a justifiable form that plays off of different design elements or themes than Mega Garchomp (XY), it just feels like...a slightly different Mega Garchomp.
Putting aside its failure to justify its existence, I think Mega Garchomp Z looks fine enough visually. Basically it modifies the original limbs into scythes, similar to Mega Garchomp XY, and covers them with white spikes. The other white spikes on the body have been reduced in favor of adding a few extra colored spines, the head protrusions now have "wings", the claws are blue, and there's additional stripes all over the body.
These are all fine changes, and I don't think anything design-wise looks bad. It's just that it feels very similar to both regular Garchomp and M Garchomp XY, raising the question, again, as to why this exists* (outside of the obvious answer of "sell merch"). Maybe if the design had been pushed to something more drastically different or the themes were more pronounced it would stick out more, but as-is, it just kind of exists.
*(I guess making it suck less competitively than M Garchomp XY could be the reason, but why not just redistribute XY's stats? Now XY's even less useful than it was originally!)
I'm not really sure which mega I like more because, again, they're pretty same-ish. I guess I prefer XY slightly, but only because the spike-lined open "jacket", shoulder pads, and sharp chin give it a subtle "Japanese delinquent" vibe that adds something to the design, while Z just expands upon the airplane theme that was already there.
So in short: Mega Garchomp Z is a decent design but very repetitive, and I would've preferred a new Pokemon get a mega over getting Garchomp 2: Electric Boogaloo over here.
