He encircled you with an arm, pressing his fingers hard against your hip to secure you there. It might have been more endearing if he hadn’t just led you to your imminent death. You dared to watch the horizon grow closer, to watch as water rushed over the edge into the abyss beyond. No starlight waited there; beyond lay only black that stretched on into nothing.
“If we don’t get a thank you out of Jack for this, I’ll kill him myself.” You felt a hysterical laugh bubble up in your chest, bursting from you in a cackling peal. Hector’s bawdy laughter joined you, before he pulled you close and kissed you hard enough to click your teeth together. Beneath your feet, the ship began to pitch—
