@meglionelmurphy's striking gouache paintings spring forth from mind, body and spirit resiliency. The Minneapolis, MN-based creative depicts within the female gaze a very steadying awareness of one's inner power and the promise of a much better tomorrow. While domestic abuse was an unfortunate part of her past, the bold colors and patterns woven throughout her artwork seem to announce, "My hands are planted firmly on the steering wheel now, thank you very much." ••• posted on Instagram - https://instagr.am/p/CLI-dyClx9t/
🦋🌈 We caught up with artist @meglionelmurphy for an exclusive interview about her debut New York solo show “Traumatica Dramatica.” 🦋🌈 The exhibit on view at @untitledspaceny features her most recent series of vibrant, personal and powerful paintings on paper and panel. The painting are inspired directly from Lionel Murphy’s own experience with domestic violence and debilitating PTSD. Each of the artist’s vivid and intricate works explore her personal perspective as well as the historical precedent of emotional and physical violence against women throughout the canon of art history. “The idea of violence haunts me, and I try to etch that subject into even the pinkest of paint,” Lionel Murphy stated of her visceral portraits. In “Traumatica Dramatica,” Murphy depicts a reverence for fragility and humanity while examining questions about whiteness, gender, sexuality, class, pain, sickness, loneliness, and most of all– violence and its haunting memories. The solo exhibition, curated by @indiracesarine, is on view at @untitledspaceny through July 2nd, with an artist reception the Thursday June 10th from 6-9pm 🌈Check out the full artist interview online now and scroll through to get a glimpse of this colorful and visceral exhibit! ❣️THE HEALING POWER OF THE GIANTESS: AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ARTIST MEG LIONEL MURPHY ✨ “Artist @meglionelmurphy is constantly thinking about bodies: how they heal, how they’re affected by their environment, how they present themselves, how they become sites for violence and pain, how they assert power. Her paintings, which often revolve around giant female-presenting bodies, stand as colorful, maximalist tributes to embodiment and empowerment. Surrounded by flowers and pill bottles, her figures consume their environments, invoking their own power through their massive forms. Lionel Murphy’s paintings are directly influenced by her own personal experiences, as she copes with debilitating PTSD from severe domestic violence. She works out of a little blue shack in a junkyard on her family’s property in Wisconsin, where she paints her detailed, vivid works on paper and panel. After leaving a career in publishing to focus on painting, Meg eventually moved to rural Wisconsin to focus on her art without distraction. The Untitled Space gallery is currently presenting an online exhibition of her latest artwork, and she is busy in her studio working on her first in person solo show to open in 2021. We chatted with Lionel Murphy about making art during the pandemic, isolation, trauma, and the aspirational nature of her paintings.” Read her interview: https://untitled-magazine.com/the-healing-power-of-the-giantess-an-exclusive-interview-with-artist-meg-lionel-murphy/ #meglionelmurphy #interview #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #femaleartist #feministart #untitledspace #newart #linkinbio https://www.instagram.com/p/CEFK7K3n2h0/?igshid=1rvfjau7vhku5
